Gun, with Occasional Music | Jonathan Lethem

Gumshoe Conrad Metcalf has problems-there's a rabbit in his waiting room and a trigger-happy kangaroo on his tail. Near-future Oakland is a brave new world where evolved animals are members of society, the police monitor citizens by their karma levels, and mind-numbing drugs such as Forgettol and Acceptol are all the rage. Metcalf has been shadowing Celeste, the wife of an affluent doctor. Perhaps he's falling a little in love with her at the same time. When the doctor turns up dead, our amiable investigator finds himself caught in a crossfire between the boys from the Inquisitor's Office and gangsters who operate out of the back room of a bar called the Fickle Muse. Mixing elements of sci-fi, noir, and mystery, this clever first novel from the author of Motherless Brooklyn is a wry, funny, and satiric look at all that the future may hold.

#Gunshot #NoFemmeber I know, I know, another Lethem. But I think this one is underappreciated: a private eye in a dystopian society with walking & talking animals as suspects? It's funny as hell, yet doesn't skimp on the mystery. Lykke Li's dark music might make a good soundtrack to Nordic noir, but maybe more for the grieving family moments than the mystery parts. Her songs really capture the catharsis you find in pain, just like the best books.

LauraJ Need to read! 6y

Leftcoastzen I love that book! 6y
Billypar @LauraJ Hope you like it as much as I did! 6y
Billypar @Leftcoastzen Even though I was already a Lethem fan when I read it, I was still surprised- I was expecting a good mystery but not how funny and inventive it was. 6y

This is the first book that came to mind with notable #punctuation in the title.

Yes, that is a kangaroo in a suit, and yes, you should read this weirdo noir.

AlaMich I‘ve heard mixed things about this, to say the least. 7y
saresmoore I‘ve heard no things about this, @AlaMich ! I‘m intrigued by “weirdo noir” though. 7y
AlaMich @saresmoore I‘ve seen “you have to read this, it‘s bonkers,” and “this is weird and not in a good way.” 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk @alamich I thought it was weird in the very best way. 7y
Leftcoastzen I read it a long time ago and loved it. 7y
vivastory This has been on my TBR for far too long. One of my strangest reading experiences involved Lethem. I read Amnesia Moon right after I read Philip K. Dick's Dr. Bloodmoney, without knowing that Lethem's book is a sequel. 7y

I wanted to zoom in one of my #animalcovers for #recommendsday

Jonathan Lethem is well known now for his high minded works with slight elements of the fantastic, but let's not forget that his first novel was a wild science fiction hard-boiled noir with superintelligent babies, a gun-toting kangaroo, and a detective who just wants his own genitals back.

You should probably read this. #riotgrams

vivastory I read his "Amnesia Moon" right after finishing Philip K Dick's "Dr. Bloodmoney" totally unaware of the influence PKD's book had on his novel 8y
ValerieAndBooks Funny that you mention him -- I haven't read him yet, but I did pick up this collection of short stories by him just yesterday at the Dollar Tree! 8y
IamIamIam Reminds me of this one 8y
elkeOriginal I LOVE his crazy early sci fi! I can't read his stuff now but treasure those early books💕 8y
JazzFeathers That sounds avsolutely crazy. I might try it 😉 8y

Silly silly silly but as a sucker for noir detective novels and sci-fi I loved it. Plus, talking kangaroo!

Mehso-so

This is the kind of story I would've really dug as a short story in high school. It's got neo-noir and scifi and dystopia and dames! With gams! I love noir, I really do. But this one really would've worked better as a short piece than stretched into a novel. Still, a mostly fun ride.

I love, love, love this book. Read it a few years ago and forgotten how entertaining it was, how smooth the prose, how imaginative Lethem is. I already want to read it again.
