The Mayakovsky Tapes
The Mayakovsky Tapes: A Novel | Robert Littell
4 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
"In March 1953, four women meet in Room 408 of Moscow's deluxe Metropole Hotel. They have gathered, not altogether willingly, to reminisce about Vladimir Mayakovsky, the poet who in death had become a national idol of Soviet Russia. In life, however, he was a much more complicated figure. Each of these ladies loved Mayakovsky in the course of his life, and as they piece together their memories of him, a portrait of the artist emerges. From his early years as a leader of the Futurist movement to years as a propagandist for the Revolution, to the censorship battles that turned him against the State, Mayakovsky is revealed as a passionate, complex man who lived at the center of history and fought to hold onto his ideals even in the face of a world changing for the worse. The Mayakovsky Tapes is an ambitious, impressive novel that captures the tumultuous life of one of the most significant writers of the Soviet era"--

Mehso-so

This was a reread for me and I‘m still not sure I liked it. I was a fan of Mayakovsky‘s poetry in my youth and wanted a better sense of who he was to the women enchanted by him. Maybe in the hands of a different (woman?) writer this would be more satisfying? I wanted to read about how Lilya cemented his legacy. Basically more than his sex life.

Cathythoughts That‘s impressive 👍🏻❤️ 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @CouronneDhiver @Cathythoughts I was so ridiculous- I was getting a haircut and the mail delivery set off my Ring doorbell, so I texted my daughter to go outside and tell me if it was from Book Outlet. I couldn‘t wait. 🤦‍♀️ 6y
vivastory Thanks for reminding me about Universal Harvester! I will definitely be checking it out soon! 6y

saresmoore @RealLifeReading It's gorgeous. I plan to savor it. 7y
saresmoore @shawnmooney In spite of your efforts to the contrary, it seems you're a good (reading) influence! 🙃 7y
saresmoore @vivastory Have you started Mayakovsky Tapes? I read a few pages today to get a feel for it and I'm not sure if I like the format. 7y
Suet624 What a lovely collection of books. Enjoy!! 7y
vivastory @saresmoore I haven't started it yet. What's the format? 7y
saresmoore Maybe format is the wrong word. It's written as a transcript of a recorded conversation between four of Mayakovsky's lovers. I find the women to be a little obnoxious, so it might take some getting used to. @vivastory (edited) 7y

I am pretty pleased with this #LibraryHaul that was overwhelmingly influenced by Litsy. The question is: What do I read first? 🤔

Suet624 Out of those 3 I've only read News. And it is officially bound to my heart. 7y
vivastory I checked out "Mayakovsky" tapes last week 7y
Suet624 Enigma Variations sounds good. I'll have to find it. 7y
