Kicking Off: How Women in Sport Are Changing the Game | Sarah Shephard
3 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
There's a battle being fought. It's raging on the sports fields, in the newsrooms and behind the scenes at every major broadcaster. Women in sport are fighting for equality with more vigour than ever, but are they breaking down the barriers that stand in their way? Sarah Shephard looks behind the headlines to see whether progress is really being made and tells the stories that can no longer be ignored. It's time for women to switch their focus from the battlefield to the sports field, once and for all. This candid and revealing book asks the questions at the forefront of the debate about women in sport: · Why do the most successful female athletes earn less than their male counterparts? · Why do so few elite sportswomen have the profile their talent deserves? · Why are girls still growing up believing that sport is 'for boys'? With contributions from women involved in sport at the highest level, including Chrissie Wellington, Maggie Alphonsi, Kelly Smith and Nicole Cooke, who reveal their personal experiences of being at the top of their game.

Pickpick

Possibly the only book I'm going to read in my #24in48 but this was great. I read it for #readharder on the #bookaboutsports prompt. There is a lot of information in this book about the problems women face in sport. Going through from pay issues to getting younger girls participating. The interviews with women in sports are really interesting and whilst I've had lots of respect for women in sports before it's gone up tenfold after this book

andreadmw Oooo. This sounds good. The Abby Wambach book was my pick for read harder but this sounds like a good pick too. Thanks! 8y
Weaponxgirl @andreadmw I've just added Abby book to my own stack. 😀 I'm not really a sports fan except for the Olympics so I found this prompt a bit of a chore at first. This one really did get me thinking, the chapter on body image being a barrier to both young girls and to how professional sports women are judged was really interesting. I really want to watch more women's sports now, such a pity it's hard to as a casual watcher. 8y
andreadmw I also was not looking forward to the sports book. But this and Abby's books seem like goodies. 8y

#24in48 so I started my challenge at midnight on Friday my time whilst at work. I was on shift with someone who doesn't read so I got distracted quite a lot but it was a quiet night and I managed to get 2:30:23 of hours reading according to my stopwatch on my phone. I'm now listening to under the udala trees on audio whilst catching up on here. Good luck with your own reading 😊

#libraryloot, don't you just love it when most of your holds come in at once!

Bkwurm The library hold flood is the best and the worst. Maybe you can take a day off to read? 🤓 8y
Weaponxgirl @Bkwurm I'm very lucky, I'm on the 2nd of 3 days off and no plans for tomorrow as its meant to snow. The hardest thing is deciding which to dive into first! 8y
Bkwurm Lucky you! I say read the first page of each one, and the one you can't stop reading is the one you dive into first. 📖🏊🏼‍♀️ 8y
Weaponxgirl @Bkwurm good plan! The graphic novels will get devoured in no time but was thinking of alternating the short stories inbetween the non fiction and the other fiction book I've got on the go atm. The best kind of problems 😊 8y
