Nobel Prize
Nobel Prize | Mois Benarroch
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
A group of Hispanic writers in the city of Irxal. Years later a somewhat successful and rather controversial writer from the group discovers that one of them is in a mental institution, his illness is peculiar and unknown to his psychiatrists: he becomes one of the characters of his books every new day. The writer becomes obsessive about his transformations and goes to visit him almost every day, until the day he is awarded The Nobel Prize. "Writing and madness are never too far away, and some of the greatest writers of all time have been unbearable types settled on a logic at least doubtful. The Nobel Prize, Mois Benarroch forces us to follow through humor, irony and satire and crude acidity through the ravings of a writer who has admitted himself to a mental institution and one of his friends, who he is interested in trying to decipher the keys to his mentality and his work. As neighboring theme, or perhaps central, doubt between popularity and good work, the desire to write for someone without actually bowing to the tastes of the public, a public increasingly less interested in thinking about anything, and jealousy among writers, who systematically lie to one another about publishing, contracts and the number of copies sold of their latest work. It reminded me of lost illusions, of Balzac, with key Sephardic humor." Javier Perez

I hadn‘t heard of Handke at all this morning, I saw the news and posted about it cause I was happy for Olga and wanted to talk about them choosing European writers... totally forgot about it at work and then saw a comment about him being controversial and I‘m blown away. The Nobel committee took a year out to deal with controversies and then awarded a literal apologist for genocide? Just read two articles and his Wikipedia and I‘m just amazed.

cathipink Yikes, I'll have to read more about this. Thanks for sharing the info. 5y
Emilymdxn @cathipink it was a big yikes from me too my exact words. Thank you massively to @AnneCecilie for letting me know or I‘d have just left it at me saying I knew nothing about him... so easy to see the news about Olga and just think about that when the guy next to her you‘ve never heard of is speaking at dictators funerals 5y
AnneCecilie I‘m happy about spreading the information. I just think it‘s a little strange that while this was all over the Norwegian press, it‘s wasn‘t caught up in international press. 5y
Emilymdxn @AnneCecilie when I looked for it I found it and there were a couple of pieces in the guardian but overall it wasn‘t something I saw about the place. British news is so 100% brexit right now I feel like we miss thousands of pieces of news that would be front page-worthy in a year that wasn‘t overwhelmed by brexit 5y
AnneCecilie I get that. Brexit is fast approaching and there isn‘t a solution yet. I‘m paying attention from afar and don‘t know what to believe 5y

Interesting article on the double Nobel prize! So many cool writers in the running and very exciting how few of them I‘ve read. It looks like I might be about to get some books added to my tbr. I‘ll add the link in comments.

I‘ve had a bit of a reading slump recently as I‘ve been so stressed moving and getting my flat sorted, it‘s been big and very anxious. I‘m trying to come back from it now but getting back in gear after a slump can be hard
