The Fire: A Novel | Katherine Neville
3 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
Katherine Nevilles groundbreaking novel, The Eight, dazzled audiences more than twenty years ago and set the literary stage for the epic thriller. A quest for a mystical chess service that once belonged to Charlemagne, it spans two centuries and three continents, and intertwines historic and modern plots, archaeological treasure hunts, esoteric riddles, and puzzles encrypted with clues from the ancient past. Now the electrifying global adventure continues, in Nevilles long anticipated sequel: THE FIRE 2003, Colorado: Alexandra Solarin is summoned home to her familys ancestral Rocky Mountain hideaway for her mothers birthday. Thirty years ago, her parents, Cat Velis and Alexander Solarin, believed that they had scattered the pieces of the Montglane Service around the world, burying with them the secrets of the power that comes with possessing it. But Alexandra arrives to find that her mother is missing and that a series of strategically placed clues, followed swiftly by the unexpected arrival of a mysterious assortment of houseguests, indicates that something sinister is afoot. When she inadvertently discovers from her aunt, the chess grandmaster Lily Rad, that the most powerful piece of Charlemagnes service has suddenly resurfaced and the Game has begun again, Alexandra is swept into a journey that takes her from Colorado to the Russian wilderness and at last into the heart of her own hometown: Washington D.C. 1822, Albania: Thirty years after the French Revolution, when the chess service was unearthed, all of Europe hovers on the brink of the War of Greek Independence. Ali Pasha, the most powerful ruler in the Ottoman Empire, has angered the sultan and is about to be attacked by Turkish forces. Now he sends the only person he can rely uponhis young daughter, Haideeon a dangerous mission to smuggle a valuable relic out of Albania, through the mountains and over the sea, to the hands of the one man who might be able to save it. Haidees journey from Albania to Morocco to Rome to Greece, and into the very heart of the Game, will result in revelations about the powerful chess set and its history that will lead at last to the spot where the service was first created more than one thousand years before: Baghdad. Blending exquisite prose and captivating history with nonstop suspense, Neville again weaves an unforgettable story of peril, action, and intrigue. From the Hardcover edition.

I wanted to like this book, I loved The Eight, but it was just so not interesting. The characters were not interesting and did not seem to have any realism to them, I honestly don‘t even remember any of their names.
The daughter of the main modern character in The Eight must deal with the start of the Game, figure out who is on what side, and avoid the collision of history that complicates her family.
1/5 stars - I can‘t recommend reading this

Mehso-so

Even though I really enjoyed The Eight, The Fire just didn't completely work for me. From the beginning, Xie (the MC) is just so passive as a character - things happen TO her for the entire book, but she never seems to make a move on her own. The historical storyline, which worked so well in the first book, was incredibly lackluster here, to the point of feeling like filler. I'm still honestly not completely sure what the point of it was. ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I'm not sure how many times in one book an author should be allowed to have the characters realize that their conversation is being bugged, but it felt like it happened constantly in this book. In the end, it wasn't a bad concept, and there were some parts of this that worked, but where The Eight's complications and interconnectedness felt natural, in The Fire it felt forced, with everyone constantly explaining to other people what ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) was going on. While I can see myself rereading The Eight, I don't see myself picking this one up again.

TheSpineView Fantastic! 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle - There were so many good elements here, I just didn't feel like they quite came together! 2y
IndoorDame It‘s been years since I‘ve read it and my memory of this one is fuzzy on the details, but I was left with similar feelings 2y
hissingpotatoes My review for this book was very similar! Especially since I liked The Eight so much. It felt like the main character was punted from plot point to plot point instead of being active, just like you said. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @IndoorDame @hissingpotatoes - It was weird because I actually really liked the MC, and it was fun to see what had happened to many of the characters from The Eight, but I just felt like the entire book was her being confused and getting dragged off somewhere else by the next person 😂 2y
ferskner That's a bummer! The Eight is one of my favorite books. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - There were a lot of great elements here, they just didn't come together for me. But I still think it's worth trying if you enjoyed the first book. And if you start it but then decide to DNF, it's worth skipping to the end to see how everyone's lives turn out haha 2y

My main #WeekendReading goal is to finish this one!!! So close!! My husband has been reenergized concerning our massive bathroom remodeling project (extra challenge: we only have one bathroom, so it needs to stay usable throughout the process!) so the weekend have not been as relaxing lately. On the other hand, if we ever finish this project I'll have an AMAZING deep tub to soak in whilst reading sooo... eyes on the prize! 😂

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Sounds a busy weekend. 2y
mabell One bathroom, even with only two people, is definitely a challenge at times! I can‘t imagine having it a work in progress at the same time! 😅 Kudos to you for tackling that!! 2y
Bookwormjillk The tub seems worth it! 2y

TheAromaofBooks @mabell @Bookwormjillk - We made good progress today - the tile is all grouted and more flooring down!!! Little bits at a time!! 2y
TheAromaofBooks @SteffK - This is hard enough with just two adults using the bathroom - I can't imagine how much more complicated it would be with little ones around, too!!! Good luck on your medical billing coursework - I've always thought that sounded like interesting work!! 2y
