5⭐️ I love my first GG novel! It‘s so fascinating to read about London‘s literary jungle in the 19th century. The struggle between poverty and productivity is so excrutiating, only the street-smarts and the practical ones can survive it. GG is so good in transitioning between sub-plots and then blending them together. So pleasing to the brain! If this is somewhere in your TBR list, move it up now!

Found this cool pic for New Grub Street. I‘m enjoying the book so far. I‘m halfway now and I want to finish it asap but I can‘t because I‘m distracted by work 😅 I‘m looking forward to devouring it this weekend 🎉

Character list is definitely a must for this book. For a moment I was lost in the Yule family‘s web. Everyone is Mr. Yule and Mrs. Yule 😅

Book publishing has always been dying! Published in the 1890s, but with a modern feel. The anti-hero protagonist is determined to earn wealth and power in the literary set by approaching literary criticism as a business. His story is contrasted with other writers' failures.

Some of my Modern Library collection. Keep promising I will keep them all together but shelf space doesn‘t always work out.The 3 brown ones next to the giant are the earliest ones .I don‘t know if that series ever had dust jackets.They are cloth and/or leatherette and flexible. I‘ll quit nerding out now 😂

I read this right around when I decided I wanted to be an English major. I found the book while walking around in The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles. I knew nothing about it. There wasn‘t even a description to read. The book just intrigued me. It was written in the 20s and is a very old edition. It‘s definitely not something everyone will like. It doesn‘t have a lot of action but there‘s deceit, friendships, relationships... it‘s a great book.

Not the original quote I intended for #cantspeakfrench, but as I can't speak Greek either this will have to do! Original quote I think is in The Ladies' Paradise by Zola (I'm pretty sure there's a letter in there that hasn't been translated).
