Monsieur Proust's Library
Monsieur Proust's Library | Anka Muhlstein
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Reading was so important to Marcel Proust that it sometimes seems he was unable to create a personage without a book in hand. Everybody in his work reads: servants and masters, children and parents, artists and physicians. The more sophisticated characters find it natural to speak in quotations. Proust made literary taste a means of defining personalities and gave literature an actual role to play in his novels. In this wonderfully entertaining book, scholar and biographer Anka Muhlstein, the author of Balzacs Omelette, draws out these themes in Proust's work and life, thus providing not only a friendly introduction to the momentous In Search of Lost Time, but also exciting highlights of some of the finest work in French literature.

The French Embassy's Albertine Bookstore in NYC is literally HEAVENLY! The celestial ceiling is swoon-worthy and the entrance stately and statuesque. They carry books in French AND translation (I'll share a pic of my stack later). It really is a wonderful bookstore! I'll post another pic in just a sec...

tpixie Wow! An Embassy bookstore? Or do they just use that name 'embassy' ? 7y
Hobbinol @tpixie it's an outreach service of the Embassy. You do have to go through security to get in... The embassy's official office is in the next block I think... I'm not sure what officers are in this building. 7y

Hobbinol @DivineDiana I HIGHLY recommend it. They have author events, lectures and panel discussions. (Unfortunately their calendar was empty when we were there.) 7y
Hobbinol @Lindy You'll have to visit the next time you come down to the city (if you haven't already.) Be sure to check out their events online before you do... 7y
