Princes at War
Princes at War: The Bitter Battle Inside Britains Royal Family in the Darkest Days of WWII | Deborah Cadbury
6 posts | 3 read | 13 to read
In 1936, the British monarchy faced the greatest threats to its survival in the modern erathe crisis of abdication and the menace of Nazism. The fate of the country rested in the hands of George Vs sorely unequipped sons: a stammering King George VI, terrified that the world might discover he was unfit to rule a dull-witted Prince Henry, who wanted only a quiet life in the army the too-glamorous Prince George, the Duke of Kenta reformed hedonist who found new purpose in the RAF and would become the first royal to die in a mysterious plane crash the Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII, deemed a Nazi-sympathizer and traitor to his own countrya man who had given it all up for love Princes at War is a riveting portrait of these four very different men miscast by fate, one of whom had to save the monarchy at a moment when kings and princes from across Europe were washing up on Englands shores as the old order was overturned. Scandal and conspiracy swirled around the palace and its courtiers, among them dangerous cousins from across Europes royal families, gold-digging American socialite Wallis Simpson, and the Kings Lord Steward, upon whose estate Hitlers deputy Rudolf Hess parachuted (seemingly by coincidence) as London burned under the Luftwaffes tireless raids. Deborah Cadbury draws on new research, personal accounts from the royal archives, and other never-before-revealed sources to create a dazzling sequel to The Kings Speech and tell the true and thrilling drama of Great Britain at war and of a staggering transformation for its monarchy.

My best friend and I are doing a year-long buddy read of books inspired by The Crown and our read for Feb is the tagged volume by Deborah Cadbury. So far it's wonderfully thorough and well-written but it gets extra kudos for teaching me about the Finnish Ski Troops of WW2. *HOW* am I just learning of this?? Amazing. #CurrentlyReading #RoyalRead

SamAnne The U.S. had skiers/mountaineers too. The 10th Mountain Division. 4y
The_Penniless_Author @SamAnne That's right here in Vermont! You see a lot of 10th Mountain Division bumper stickers driving around here. 4y
Andrea313 @SamAnne @The_Penniless_Author Thank you for that! I had no idea; clearly military history is something I need to spend more time with! 4y

I stalled out on this a couple of years ago, but as my best friend and I do a year-long #RoyalRead, inspired by The Crown, we're making it our February selection. I'm looking forward to finishing it this time!

Someone a lot more interested in actual WWII history might enjoy it more. I enjoyed her Queen Victoria‘s Matchmaking book more. ALSO doing terribly on #24B4Monday as we found out Friday morning my husband has to go to WV for a whole month for some work training and he leaves next Monday so been trying to spend time together/get everything ready for that.

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4y

Cup of tea and evening reading. The only thing that could make this better would be fall temperatures. Come on, cool weather, where ya at?! #currentlyreading
