One Year After
One Year After: A Novel | William R. Forstchen
"Months before publication, William R. Forstchen's One Second After was cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read. Hundreds of thousands of people have read the tale. One Year After is the thrilling follow-up to that smash hit. The story picks up a year after One Second After ends, two years since the detonation of nuclear weapons above the United States brought America to its knees. After suffering starvation, war, and countless deaths, the survivors of Black Mountain, North Carolina, are beginning to piece back together the technologies they had once taken for granted: electricity, radio communications, and medications. They cling to the hope that a new national government is finally emerging. Then comes word that most of the young men and women of the community are to be drafted into an "Army of National Recovery" and sent to trouble spots hundreds of miles away. When town administrator John Matherson protests the draft, he's offered a deal: leave Black Mountain and enter national service, and the draft will be reduced. But the brutal suppression of a neighboring community under its new federal administrator and the troops accompanying him suggests that all is not as it should be with this burgeoning government"--

This book was part 2 of a 3 part series. I rarely read series, but will definitely read past 3 in this case. This was a fast read. A little too many battle scenes for my liking, but what can you expect from a war story? I like the character, John Matherson. I hope we don‘t ever encounter the type of events that took place in this story, but if we do, we‘d be lucky to have a man like John on our side.

“We always let someone else worry about such things, even though we knew that those we allowed to be in charge were far too often incompetent-or worse, self-serving & blind in their arrogance.”

I finished this audiobook on the drive here me from work yesterday. It was pretty good, but the story was not nearly as compelling as the first book in the series, One Second After. That one had a really original problem for the characters, while this one did not.

In moments of weakness (like right now, obviously), it occurs to me how terrible it would be to go without coffee if something catastrophic ever happened that caused me to HAVE to. Coffee and chocolate are my weaknesses, and the thought of not being able to just walk into a grocery store and buy either one kind of makes me want to cry.

CherryPie How do you take your coffee? I'm already looking forward to morning. 😄 6y
JosieG @CherryPie I drink half-caff with just flavored creamer. Right now, I'm still drinking it with chocolate peppermint flavored even though the holidays are over. Coffee sounds pretty good right about now... 😁 6y
GarthRanzz I still need to finish this one. Loved the first two in the series. And I think the same thing while reading them. How something we take for such granted is precious to those after a major disaster. I don‘t know what I would do with my daily coffee! 6y

CherryPie My partner would do the peppermint year-round if it was available. I'm doing black with stevia. Often cold. Cheers! 6y
JosieG @GarthRanzz It's so true... even just being able to put a meal on the table would be a whole different experience, and that is so strange to think about. 6y
JosieG @CherryPie At least where I live, the peppermint mocha seems to be available year-round, which has always been surprising to me, because peppermint is so tied to December In my mind. But, this year I'm really on a peppermint kick, so I'm grateful it's so available. 😊 6y

"He felt a deep swelling of pride but also anguish. It was the torment all loving parents feel when they see their child making a difficult and perhaps dangerous decision as an adult when, in memory, they still see the small innocent child of years long gone."

Excellent second book in this series! I recommend you read 'One Second After' (Book 1)...especially the intro. Guaranteed you'll be hooked. This is a real life disaster probability. Scary.

Jaimelire Book one was good...I may have to read this one soon 6y
Bookdragon69 I was sucked into this series after reading the first book. Scary because of the true possibilities. 6y
ItsAnotherJen @jaimelire I had low expectations for the second book and was really surprised at how good it was! I loved the first one so much I didn't think they could do well with it turning into a series. And the 3rd book has a higher goodreads rating than the 1st or 2nd! 6y
