One Second After
One Second After | William R. Forstchen
New York Times best selling author William R. Forstchen now brings us a story which can be all too terrifyingly real...a story in which one man struggles to save his family and his small North Carolina town after America loses a war, in one second, a war that will send America back to the Dark Ages...A war based upon a weapon, an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP). A weapon that may already be in the hands of our enemies. Months before publication, One Second After has already been cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read, a book already being discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a truly realistic look at a weapon and its awesome power to destroy the entire United States, literally within one second. It is a weapon that the Wall Street Journal warns could shatter America. In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future...and our end.

So many problems with this macho flag waving genuflecting prepper porn story. Narrator was awful reading any female or any dramatic moments. Will give props for making realistic + brutal character/plot decisions, but to be expected in a book whose purpose is to scare people into prepping for an EMP attack. Worth reading as a thought exercise, but be prepared for narrow minded world views.

2009. That‘s the publication date for this book. 2000 freaking nine🤬 Who still writes this kind of sexist crap?

Putting down the audiobook for now. Everything I‘ve heard about this book stresses how informative it is and sparks a prepper mindset. I‘ve been shoring up my family‘s preparedness, esp after Covid, so I want to read this book, but he‘s already going overboard on Southern gentility, Apple pie, guns, god, and scientific ignorance.

😡Listening to some prepper porn. How does the US fare after an EMP attack? Genuinely want to know different takes on this subject. Opening chapter clunkily sets up lots of electronics that will be wiped. Sounded similar to Cory Doctorow‘s awkward plots to explain technology. OK with that. But then there‘s a “patriot bear” Beanie Baby. There‘s a female mayor who‘s written as an idiot. Oh, and there‘s this lovely hint of climate change denial!

PaperbackPirate Thank you for sharing! That‘s a pass for me. 😬 9mo
DogMomIrene @PaperbackPirate Yeah, there were some circumstances handled incredibly realistically, but the overall right tilt was just too much. I‘m passing on the sequels. 9mo

Holy cow!! Did this book ever get me reading. And thinking. And worrying. I never heard the acronym “EMP”. I kind of wish I never had. My son in law recommended I read this book. I‘m glad I did! Warning - it covers some intense topics. Things I pray we will never have to deal with in our lifetimes. Needless to say, this book was enjoyable, but unnerving.

“One second after an EMP attack, it will be too late to ask two simply questions: what should we have done to prevent the attack and why didn‘t we do it?”

I absolutely LOVED this book and thoroughly enjoyed it I‘ve learned so much about the potential happenings of an EMP attack that for some reason, still to this day, is sought out to be not very important.

What would you do if you were brought back to the dark ages?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Warning: this book is graphic and sad. I read this book in a couple of days and could not put it down. It is a story I think about often. Forstchen explores the implications of a world reliant on technology when society collapses. The main character serves as a lens through which to view the lives around him. It's absolutely heartbreaking. I will probably not read it again, but I am glad I read it.

This is a book I read every couple of years because it‘s one of my favorites. Black Mountain is a little over an hour from where I live. My sister-in-law played basketball at Montreat College. This is one of the books I gift to avid readers or suggest when someone asks for book recommendations. Is it the most well written book, no, but it‘s entertaining, terrifying, and will make you think about reliant we are on technology for everything.

🎧 This book was a condensed extreme reality of what could happen to civilization if all tech died in a split second. It takes place just outside of Asheville NC. There‘s a repetitive line about patriotism & religion but it fit well within the story. It‘s an extremely bleak forecast. Oddly enough it was quite engaging. Not too long and the narrator was pleasant. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/3

Talk about a terrifying book... This is a look at what would happen if the US were bombed by an EMP. Would the loss of power lead to our societies loss of humanity? This book definitely scared me. It reminded me of all the things we take for granted.

I would definitely recommend this book to any survivalists, military enthusiasts, or apocalyptic readers.

This is a terrifying read that scared the hell out of me because it truly could happen. It‘s about an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack on the US, which renders useless every electrical device known to man. The focus is one mans family & how his community must work together to survive in its aftermath. The heartbreaking sacrifices, struggles, & insight into how your hometown would need to unify under Marshall Law to survive.

tpixie I‘ve always thought this would be a great premise for a book. Stacked! ( Maybe I need to take a survival course 🤪) 6y

A story that explores the aftermath of an EMP burst over the US. Told from the perspective of a former military officer, now college professor in a small rural North Carolina town. Doesn‘t pull any punches, very believable. Still getting used to the rankings here. Probably somewhere in between Pick and So-So

This was a re-read for me, after several years, so I suppose I'm more critical of it now, and went from loving it to just really liking it. But, that aside, still a rather chilling look at what a community could go through if an EMP attack were to occur here. Covers issues like lack of pharmaceuticals for all kinds of heath conditions, as well as trying to feed way too many people with way too few resources. Has issues, but I enjoyed it.

Lots of campy God Bless America vibes in this story of one towns struggle to survive after an EMP attack on America, but don't let that deter you! If you enjoy the apocalyptic/dystopian genre you'll enjoy this.

Forstchen is methodical in descriptions of the break-down of our small towns. It made me think about what would happen to my quaint little neighborhood in such an event...

My problem with this book is the way it valorizes gun culture. If everyone read this book, they would not stock up on water and food but rather guns. Sigh. In other ways, it was a good post apocalyptic story with all the chaos one would expect.

We are way behind on disaster preparedness, but at least now I have a better idea of what to stock up on. A truly riveting story, and if you take into account that this is actually something that could occur, not only in our country but anywhere in the world, you realize that you should probably be storing up some provisions. This story moved me, and I understood that it was told with realism in mind - not entertainment. Next up, "One year after"!
