Winner of the James Tiptree, Jr. Award, Crawford Award, and Prix Aurora Award. An old woman hangs in a cage; a young woman slaves on a rich lord's estate. How does a woman discover and assert her identity in a primeval, barbaric world? From slave dens to merchant cities to isolated mountains, Candas Jane Dorsey's novel is a powerful exploration of gender, identity, and freedom.

Original cover (Tor), 1996 on the left; new cover (Recorded Books), 2023 on the right. Which one captures gothic speculative fiction best?

LeahBergen I like the original (but I‘m an old fogey 😆). 6mo
Lindy @LeahBergen Old fogey here too 🙋‍♀️ (edited) 6mo
Suet624 I don‘t really like either one. 🥴 5mo
Lindy @Suet624 the third option: none of the above 😉 5mo

Thx @sudi 😘😘😘 #covercrush #7days7covers

I saw this book in Paragraph bookstore in Mtl (the old location) a few weeks after it came out. I picked it up in the store, intrigued, read the first sentence, lost my breath, sat down, open the book again, and the sentence was still there. The cover calls to a gothic book, and it starts as such, before switching to horror, then SF, to epic fantasy and ends in a mix of all three. A feat of genius.

Clare-Dragonfly Everyone else has said “no explanation.” I like your version better 😄 5y
batsy Yes, I love the explanations, actually! I love knowing why someone picks a particular cover. ❤️ 5y
tournevis @Clare-Dragonfly Could not resist. 😁 5y

1️⃣ There are so many! Probably tagged. It's all the genres together, but it's SF.
2️⃣ Never liked many of them, but I logged *hours* on Crystal Quest on the Mac back in the day.
3️⃣ Japan (yes, I know they broke up in 1982).
4️⃣ Wrath of Khan, or Last Starfighter, or Enemy Mine, or Labyrinth, or Princess Bride... Why are you making me choose?
#manicmonday @JoScho

JoScho Lol I did make it plural this time because choosing one is pretty much impossible 😊 6y

Pickpick

This is also one of my favorite covers. Which is strange since I find it rather ugly. But it is so reminiscent of the book itself: dark, quietly violent, cloying and viscious. Black wine also has the best, most gutt-wrenching opening line of any book: "There is a scarred, twisted old madwoman in a cage in the courtyard."
