I've been listening to a lot of classical music while I read and then it bled into work and now I'm listening more. I love Aaron Copland. Any classical music buffs out there that could recommend other similar composers?

BookishBeth I love this idea. I've always shied away from music while reading or working because I thought it would distract me but I'm going to try this. 7y
Megabooks @BookishBeth I really enjoy it! There are great Pandora stations. Right now I'm listening to a Copland compilation on YouTube. 7y

ScientistSam I like classical music but I don't really know Copland very well, so I asked my dad. He suggested Ferde Grofe, especially the Grand Canyon Suite. 7y
Megabooks Thank you so much @jenniferw88 !!! The Bustle piece especially. I hadn't known about most of those. 👍🏻 7y
Megabooks @ScientistSam Thank you for asking and thank your father! I had heard of but not listened to the Grand Canyon Suite. I didn't know who composed it. 7y
moranadatter Maybe Khachaturian's Masquerade Suite? Do you have any favorite works by Copeland? That might help me get a better feel for what you like about his music. This is nothing like Copeland, but Fingal's Cave by Felix Mendelssohn is one of my favorite pieces of music if you're up for trying something different. 7y
Megabooks @moranadatter Appalachian Spring and American Fantasia. And than you for the recommendations! I'll check them out 👍🏻 I like the mid century American sound to his work. Perhaps I can find other composers from that era. 7y
moranadatter I'll listen to those and see if I can think of any works that have a similar feel. It might also be worth exploring some of the work of the composers who influenced him: Nadia Boulanger, Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky, and Claude Debussy. If you dig around in his bio, you'll likely find more of his influences. That's how I find more music to love. I go backwards. 😀 7y
LauraBrook I LOVE classical music and played viola for 13 years and sang in many choirs. It was a wonderful way to learn about lots of different composers and styles. Copeland is wonderful. Let me flip through my CDs and get back to you. Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" is a favorite, and popped into my head. 7y
moranadatter Ooh! Definitely try Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams. 7y
Megabooks @moranadatter oooo! Thank you! Great suggestions! I just awakened from a nap, so I'll have to check them out. Good idea to look back and maybe also forward a by to people who were influenced by him 😃👍🏻 7y
Megabooks @LauraBrook I love string music! I also played the viola but just for 3 years. It's such a beautiful instrument! I was in middle/high school when I was playing, and I don't remember much of the music. I do remember working on more stuff from the 1700s and 1800s than contemporary artists. 7y
Hobbinol I'm easily drawn into music and frequently have to segregate them from my reading life. It depends. Half the time I find I've stopped reading to listen to the music! And I love recorded books, but my long commute is my time with the classical station. I love it all and going to the symphony is always a real high for me. 7y
Hobbinol @LauraBrook ❤️Barber's Adagio❗️ 7y
Megabooks @Hobbinol I think I'm going to get symphony tickets next season! I stop reading and listen as well. My musical tastes are varied. I've been in an audiobook slump, so I've been listening to more music when I drive. 7y

As a music teacher and avid reader, I'd say this title describes my life! Also a fantastic book in general. How could it not be? It's Aaron Copland. #Litsy #23in48 #readathon
