Help for the Haunted
Help for the Haunted | John Searles
14 posts | 45 read | 23 to read
It begins with a call one snowy February night. Lying in her bed, fourteen-year-old Sylvie Mason overhears her parents on the phone across the hall. This is not the first late-night call they have received, since her mother and father have an uncommon occupation: helping 'haunted souls' find peace. And yet something in Sylvie senses that this call is different from the others, especially when they are lured to the old church on the outskirts of town. Once there, her parents disappear, one after the other, behind the church's red door, leaving Sylvie alone in the car. Not long after, she drifts off to sleep, only to wake to the sound of gunfire. As the story weaves back and forth through the years leading up to that night and the months following, the ever-inquisitive Sylvie searched for answers and uncovers secrets that have haunted her family for years . . . Help for the Haunted is a psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, told in the captivating voice of a young heroine who is determined to discover the truth about what happened that winter night.

I don‘t think I really liked this book, yet you quickly develop a relationship with the young protagonist. It‘s a story of an extremely disfunctional family and how their lives & deaths affect a young teenager just starting high school.

Just ok. The blurb on the back made me think this was more of a spooky read but instead it's a mystery/dysfunctional family story.

Burghbookaddict I read this years ago and thought the same thing. I was disappointed. 6y

This book is not at all what I expected. I def think it was worth reading, but other than the main character, it was kind of flat.

Interesting read. Very good story, odd writing style but seems to fit the way the story plays out.

Haul from the past two days... the book in the top right corner was from target, the one to the left of it I received from Amazon, and the others came from a yard sale this morning.

mcipher How is this? It sounds really interesting! 8y
respekt1111 @mcipher Funny you should ask! I literally finished this five minutes ago? It's not a traditional "haunting" story in the supernatural sense, but more about the ways our family haunts us. The way the author threads together disparate elements into a revelation at the end had me reading pretty frantically at the end. Though I'm still parsing out how I feel about some elements of the resolution. All in all I recommend ?? 8y

Donna_sBookMinute Tempting blurb and synopsis. (edited) 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @mcipher I'd second @respekt1111's opinion on this one. It's different, sometimes odd, but good. 8y
Soubhiville I liked this one! 8y

The endless disparity between your perception of yourself and the perception of others.

MidnightBookGirl This book would make for a great discussion! 8y

Kicking off the last day of my vacation with what looks to be the final book of 2016, and of course #coffee because I stayed up until 4 this morning finishing a different book😁

Pickpick

The family dynamics were scarier than the supernatural elements. It's more a murder mystery and common of age story than a story about hauntings.

The author mentions that this book combines murder mystery, paranormal activities, and coming-of-age stories. For me, it never hit any of these genres cleanly. In fact, the story was long, slow slog through muddied waters. I liked the main character Sylvie, but there were few others I cared about.

I'm making my way through this one. It's good but slow in these early pages. I appreciate that this author has the same name as my dad, but isn't related to me (that I'm aware of).

JodyS I read this one a while back and thought it was good. 9y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @JodyS I'm expecting it to pick up its pace soon. Thanks! 9y
NatalieR I read this last fall, Halloween season and really enjoyed it. Hope you are enjoying it. 👻 9y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @NatalieR I am enjoying it although it feels a little slow. As always, that could just be me! 9y
