The Untold Story of the Talking Book
The Untold Story of the Talking Book | Matthew Rubery
2 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
Histories of the book often move straight from the codex to the digital screen. Left out is nearly 150 years of audio recordings. Matthew Rubery uncovers this story, from Edison to todays billion-dollar audiobook industry, and breaks from convention by treating audiobooks as a distinctive art form that has profoundly influenced the way we read.

Well... it's interesting. For me, I'm listening to this on audio and it's almost like it would be better in print 😂 The narrator sounds like a robot and the content is organized in such a way that it's hard to follow while listening. But still really interesting history of audiobooks! #currentread

#TBRtemptation post! I browsed through this book while browsing through the bookstore (???), & I've got to get a copy of this!!! It has fascinating material inside. This isn't just a history (which starts with Thomas Edison recording "Mary Had a Little Lamb") of the never-discussed audio book & the technology, but also the social impact & the controversies it stirred, from the Library of Congress to the DoD. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

AvidReader25 This looks so good! 8y
