Murder, Magic, and What We Wore
Murder, Magic, and What We Wore | Kelly Jones
12 posts | 8 read | 23 to read
Fans of Patrice Kindls Keeping the Castle or Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermers Sorcery and Cecelia will adore this funny Regency-era mystery about a determined young woman with a magical trick up her sleeve . . . The year is 1818, the city is London, and 16-year-old Annis Whitworth has just learned that her father is dead and all his money is missing. And so, of course, she decides to become a spy. Annis always suspected that her father was himself a spy, and following in his footsteps to unmask his killer makes perfect sense. Alas, it does not make sense to Englands current spymastersnot even when Annis reveals that she has the rare magical ability to sew glamours: garments that can disguise the wearer completely. Well, if the spies are too pigheaded to take on a young woman of quality, then Annis will take them on. And so she crafts a new double life for herself. Miss Annis Whitworth will appear to live a quiet life in a country cottage with her aunt, and Annis-in-disguise as Madame Martine, glamour artist, will open a magical dressmaking shop. That way she can earn a living, maintain her social standing, and, in her spare time, follow the coded clues her father left behind and unmask his killer. It cant be any harder than navigating the London social season, can it?

I love magical regency stories, and this one was delightful. I especially love that the story centered on a mystery and strong female friendship, rather than romance. Hoping for a sequel!

It‘s not perfect, and I have some quibbles, but it is so delightful the sheer joy of reading it overcame them. Regency. Magic. Spies. And Fashion. It has two wonderful heroines and celebrates female friendships. Also there is a beautiful scene where a group of angry women band together to give a pervert predator what he has coming to him.

And this dedication kept its book on my shelf: “For anyone who has escaped into a book.” 😍

But I took the picture this morning and now I‘m unsure as to exactly which book it belonged. I believe it‘s the tagged book. That I don‘t remember doesn‘t bode well...

Finished this last night. Guessed the bad guy from a single comment 2/3 of the way through. Don‘t know if it‘s all the Agatha Christie I‘ve been reading, but the clue seemed straightforward. It was fine, but not awesome. Melvin agrees. #catsoflitsy

Jane Austen meets Harriet the Spy is the vibe I got from this fun YA book. Loved that the 19th Century heroine is not shy about stuffing her face with food and has aspirations that don't involve marrying rich.

rubyslippersreads This sounds great! 7y
KGlibrarian @rubyslippersreads It was! Just not sure if teenage readers will fully connect with it and get the humor the way adults will. 7y
