House of Windows
House of Windows | John Langan
6 posts | 5 read | 23 to read
For the last few years, Veronica Croydon has been at the center of scandal, first as the younger woman for whom her famous professor left his wife, and then as the apparent widow of that man. When a writer staying at the same vacation home as Veronica has the chance to hear her story, he jumps at it. What follows takes him to the dark heart of a father's troubled relationship with his only son, in a story that stretches from a college town in the Hudson Valley to the battlefields on Afghanistan, from post-9/11 America to the height of Victorian England. It is a story that leads inexorably to the Belvedere House, the home Veronica shares with her husband, within whose walls a father's terrible words to his son echo and gain in awful force. With nods to Peter Straub, H.P. Lovecraft, and Charles Dickens, House of Windows is a tense, frightening exploration of a marriage under strain from forces psychological and supernatural, a meditation on the ways loss haunts every one of us.

I saw mixed reviews and didn't expect to enjoy this. I did. Very much. It reads like a modern take on a 60s ghost movie. I can see a screenplay. It's long-winded and detail heavy, but reads quickly. The story isn't the most original, but there's enough new to make you keep turning pages. I could of done with more chapter breaks, but I'm particular. Very enjoyable.

Starting this sucker tonight. On my slightly-compulsive way to "The Fisherman".

This is Veronica, a graduate student‘s retelling of her thoughts about her affair with her English Professor, and how they were caught by his wife. The whole book is heavily laden with these references of the classics. John Langan is a superb writer.

Cinfhen Sounds good!! 6y
Reggie @Cinfhen it is!!!!! Just a warning, it is a ghost story but don‘t let that derail you. I fell in love with his characters. 6y

sprainedbrain Ghost story? That makes it even more appealing!! 6y
Reggie @sprainedbrain I hope you read it. Some of it just tickled me and then there were parts where it felt, like it was in love with itself, rightfully so, and then there were wtf is going on parts, and all parts were good. I‘m still in the euphoria of this book. 6y

I don‘t have the vocabulary to convey the amount of love I have for this book. Veronica is a graduate student that takes a class with Roger Croyden. Despite him being 4 decades older they fall in love, he leaves his wife and they marry. After a seemingly innocent gesture goes awry, Roger and his son from the first marriage will brawl and start the Twilight Zone portion of what seemed to be this lovely, anatomy of a relationship, story. So good.

Cinfhen Another brilliant review 💚 6y
