No Picnic on Mount Kenya
No Picnic on Mount Kenya | Felice Benuzzi
5 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
A rediscovered mountaineering classic and the extraordinary true story of a daring escape up Mount Kenya by three prisoners of war. When the clouds covering Mount Kenya part one morning to reveal its towering peaks for the first time, prisoner of war Felice Benuzzi is transfixed. The tedium of camp life is broken by the beginnings of a sudden idea - an outrageous, dangerous, brilliant idea. There are not many people who would break out of a P.O.W. camp, trek for days across perilous terrain before climbing the north face of Mount Kenya with improvised equipment, meagre rations, and with a picture of the mountain on a tin of beef among their more accurate guides. There are probably fewer still who would break back in to the camp on their return. But this is the remarkable story of three such men. No Picnic on Mount Kenya is a powerful testament to the human spirit of revolt and adventure in even the darkest of places. "The history of mountaineering can hardly present a parallel to this mad but thrilling escapade" - Saturday Review "A most extraordinary prisoner-of-war and escape story" - New Yorker "A mad venture and a gallant tribute to man's deep yearning for freedom" - Kirkus Reviews "The book crackles with the same dry humour as its title. It contains the prison-yard bartering and candlelight stitching that mark a classic jailbreak yarn; the encounters with wild beasts in Mount Kenya's forest belt are as gripping, and the descriptions of sparkling glaciers as awe-inspiring, as any passage in the great exploration diaries of the early 20th century" - The Economist

Mehso-so

The first half, or even two thirds, I was captivated. Loved the build up and the eventual setting off, the intrepid journey. But then either I lost momentum, or the story seemed to drag a little. May be indicative of how they were feeling. But I didn't feel compelled to continue, more of am obligation.
Fascinating historical context though and what bloomin brave guys!

Right #bookreport and #weeklyforecast for #hiselderliness (Mr 87 who just decided to become a bookworm at 83 - never give up on those non-readers!)

I deliver his latest load of library books. “That book!” He says shaking his head. “Wasn‘t it good?” I ask. “It kept me up all night reading it!” he says. 😂
That‘s a 5 star then for the Mount Kenya book. 🙌🙌The other three just joined the To be Read pile.

Centique @JennyM thanks Jenny! 😘 5y
AlaMich I love your Dad book reports! My dad is sort of the opposite. He used to be a serious reader but now only occasionally. 5y

Crazeedi @Centique so great, makes my heart smile! 5y
Reagan Oh boy, if he likes The Wave, she wrote another book that is my favourite! 5y
Centique @AlaMich how interesting - I hope it‘s because he‘s busy doing other things he likes. 😍Or is it maybe health related, making reading hard? ☹️ 5y
Centique @TrishB I think this is the first time he‘s had that happen! 5y
Centique @Crazeedi aww that‘s lovely 😛😘 5y
Centique @Reagan thanks! That‘s a great recc 😘 5y
Cinfhen Love the sticker 🥰and such an endorsement #stacked 5y
AlaMich @Centique Yeah, about 7 years ago he had a pretty serious brain injury from a fall. He made a remarkable recovery, but his attention span was compromised. 5y
Centique @AlaMich oh the poor thing! My mother also had a brain injury (lack of oxygen after a cardiac arrest) and didn‘t read again after that. She got most things back but not reading and not listening to music strangely. It‘s really tough. Love to you & your family 💕 5y
AlaMich @Centique Likewise! 😊 5y

Pickpick

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This work swung me mercilessly from nail biting anxiety for the POWs, and speechless wonder in face of the ethereal scenes of Mount Kenya that Benuzzi has artfully penned to life.

Never before have I read a work so very like the depictions of a master landscape artist. Benuzzi leaves just enough unsaid to allow our imagination to take up the brush and complete a rendering of Mount Kenya unique to each reader.

#mountains I read about this story recently, now I need to find the book. Three Italian POWs escape a British camp to climb Mount Kenya, with no experience and small supplies.
