This book is a Caldecott winner(pub.1994). Is extremely informative and brings up real world issues. The story is of how a child is watching a riot take place and how the night also progresses into a fire taking place in the apartment building.
Overall, this book is beautifully illustrated and is written very well. The issues brought up in the book are necessary and should be emphasized. “People are rioting in the streets below.“

This RF Caldecott winning book written by Eve Bunting is a story about the LA riots following the Rodney King verdict, a monumental court case that sparked not only riots but racial tension that still exists today. The story is about a mother and her son that escape their burning apartment and learn learn the value of overlooking racial and cultural differences to find kindness and friendship. I strongly recommend this book for all classrooms.

Mmw2478 A little background on what the Rodney King case was. http://projects.scpr.org/timelines/la-riots-25-years-later/ 6y
Mmw2478 UDL principles 2.1, 3.1, 3.3, 8.3 would be covered with this book. Clarifying vocabulary, activate or supply background knowledge, guide information processing, and foster collaboration and community. (edited) 6y
Mmw2478 ESOL Strategies 2,3,4,6,11 could be applied here. Promote cooperation, encourage self talk, link lesson topic to prior knowledge, monitor students‘ comprehension, and place language in meaningful context. TS would be great for RA that would give the opportunity for important discussion and feedback. (edited) 6y
