Spinsters in Jeopardy
Spinsters in Jeopardy: Roderick Alleyn #17 | Ngaio Marsh
10 posts | 8 read | 1 to read
England, New Zealand, a theatrical milieu, and a roster of clues…readers will recognize the hallmarks of Ngaio Marsh’s classic series. And they won’t find any of them here. Instead, Inspector Alleyn has decamped for the South of France for a vacation en famille. Well, the famille will be vay-caying while Alleyn does a little official poking around. Unfortunately, the object of his poking – the cultish denizens of a sinister and luxurious chateau – are not over-fond of being poked, and they have a particularly unpleasant way of getting their point across. More a thriller than a straight-ahead whodunit, Spinsters is a fresh take for Marsh, while at the same time retaining the cleverness and warm, vivid characterizations that her fans demand.

I bought a pulpy paperback style edition of this book at a used bookstore, and I was excited for some cheesy pulpy style murder mystery 1950s action. Alas. Even with the cult bad guys and crazed reefer addicts and the creepy mountain mansion, there are really very few spinsters actually in jeopardy, and the book is entirely boring. If it had been any longer, I wouldn't have finished it.

Bought this one in a used-book store in Chico, CA because the title cracked me up. 1961 paperback mystery, New Zealander author, pubbed in 1954. It‘s the 17th in a series, which I usually don‘t start with (oops!), but I‘m doing it.

Maria514626 The title and the cover! 😱😆 This would make great, silly, wall art. 2y

I‘m not feeling very good about myself today. Sometimes I, too, feel like the only thing I‘m good for is alphabetizing things. Fortunately, I hoard Jeopardy! episodes for just such an occasion.

But, on a positive note, I got to play with a teeny, tiny kitten at work today. His litter was in an old car that we bought for a vehicle extrication class, but he was the only one who survived. He was sooo sweet, though. I almost brought him home.

Lcsmcat Rescuing a kitten is not alphabetizing. 2y

batsy Oooh... It's kind of strangely awesome 😆 6y
Lindy @batsy I like it too. That handmade font. The paper cutout figures. The spookiness. 6y

CarolynM But with a title like that, what are you going to do? 6y
rabbitprincess This one does convey how bananas the book is, so there's that 😂 6y

Pickpick

We'll call this a pick in a totally bonkers way. Reminiscent of Death in Ecstasy, but perhaps with more intentional humour, and some excellent use of French to make the setting feel authentic.
