The Wayward Bus
The Wayward Bus | John Steinbeck
20 posts | 26 read | 11 to read
In his first novel to follow the publication of his enormous success, The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbecks vision comes wonderfully to life in this imaginative and unsentimental chronicle of a bus traveling Californias back roads, transporting the lost and the lonely, the good and the greedy, the stupid and the scheming, the beautiful and the vicious away from their shattered dreams and, possibly, toward the promise of the future. This edition features an introduction by Gary Scharnhorst. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. From the Trade Paperback edition.

My pickup from my trip to the finger lakes. I like Steinbeck and so far enjoyed what I have read written by him so I thought I would give this one a chance.

As usual, Steinbeck's masterful description of the scenery is top notch. The Wayward Bus also has some witty dialogue. Steinbeck uses the dialog to portray the characters that are a cross section of American culture. It's like a commentary on the way Steinbeck sees various types of people. I felt I could identify with some of the characters. I felt Steinbeck over-emphasized the sexual tension between the characters.

This is the first book that came to mind but not my first thought. My first thought was the Kindermusik song Wheels on the Bus. 💜🎶

Superb writing and such depth in the characters. I found I read chunks then left a while, then returned and read more.
I didn't have the same sense of true adoration for this book as I have for some of the others but still a brilliantly written novel.

Steinbeck has always been enjoyable for me. Smooth words and rough social subjects; goes in like a warm coffee. All the better with company in precautionary isolation.

# 16 of 100 Classics Challenge
this group of discontented passengers with quite diverse backgrounds and lifestyles are forced to weather the storm togethr on a bus...and they find that maybe the one thing we have in common isn't our title or what we are...but who we allow ourselves to be.
Excellent.

Compelling, well characterised and a fascinating insight into Steinbeck‘s misogynistic take on women!

Steinbeck loves to explore all the crazy minds of his characters. This book, while quite a departure from what I think of when I think Steinbeck, is a great study of character development. Here we have a group of people from different backgrounds and goals together on a bus that may or may not get stranded due to rain and flooding and an unsteady bridge. Not a ton happens in this book but my, we do get to know each of the characters!

Steinbeck has amazing skill in presenting his characters. Each is one of a kind, allowing them to connect with the reader. His characters are well developed, He is an unsurpassed master, at least that's what I think. While probably not one of my favorite Steinbeck works, it's certainly a good one. Beautiful look at a piece of time in a group of peoples lives.

Bostonmomx2 One I hadn't heard of. Thanks for posting. I used to live in the Salinas valley so I enjoy reading his books. 7y
