The Craving Mind
The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love? Why We Get Hooked and How We Can Break Bad Habits | Judson Brewer
4 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
A leading neuroscientist and pioneer in the study of mindfulness explains why addictions are so tenacious and how we can learn to conquer them We are all vulnerable to addiction. Whether its a compulsion to constantly check social media, binge eating, smoking, excessive drinking, or any other behaviors, we may find ourselves uncontrollably repeating. Why are bad habits so hard to overcome? Is there a key to conquering the cravings we know are unhealthy for us? This book provides groundbreaking answers to the most important questions about addiction. Dr. Judson Brewer, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who has studied the science of addictions for twenty years, reveals how we can tap into the very processes that encourage addictive behaviors in order to step out of them. He describes the mechanisms of habit and addiction formation, then explains how the practice of mindfulness can interrupt these habits. Weaving together patient stories, his own experience with mindfulness practice, and current scientific findings from his own lab and others, Dr. Brewer offers a path for moving beyond our cravings, reducing stress, and ultimately living a fuller life.

I have a few bad habits I'd like to break but my mind is wandering like crazy while I listen. Maybe NF doesn't work for me on audio? 🤔

Thank you internet! Not read - me and self help books have never got along 😁

Cathythoughts I‘m with you there ... not a fan of the self help books either 5y
Cinfhen Same 🙋‍♀️ @Cathythoughts @TrishB not that I‘m without flaw 😉 5y
Velvetfur I'm going to 'come out' about being a reader of self help books! So there! 😛 I don't take them that seriously, but I find little bits of inspiration here and there, I just like to know how other people see things sometimes 😊 @Cathythoughts @Cinfhen 5y

TrishB @Velvetfur I tend to go on message boards or similar if I really want to see/ask other people‘s opinions. The very few self help books I‘ve read I can summarise - have me time, eat well and exercise 😁😁 5y
TrishB @Cathythoughts @Cinfhen same! Not that I don‘t need help but begrudge wasting book money for it! 5y
Cinfhen Ha @Velvetfur 🙌🏻🎊💖I think self-help books do get a bad rap, unfairly. But unfortunately, they sometimes tend to capitalize off of others. 5y
Cathythoughts @Velvetfur I do love Pema Chodrin & Rumi & the more spiritual writers .... but some of the self- help books I just don‘t find helpful 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
Cathythoughts @Velvetfur or I can pick up a couple of lines from poems & songs... and use them like mantras... I find that can really help me ❤️👍 (edited) 5y
Velvetfur @TrishB Oh yes, they all follow the same format! The relationship ones are: don't shout at each other, and listen when your other half speaks 😂😂 5y
Velvetfur @Cinfhen Ah yes, I hadn't thought of that... Some self help books (that I've avoided) do seem to target certain types of people, and they basically look as if they're plagiarising previous books on the subject 🙁 5y
Velvetfur @Cathythoughts Yes I agree, they're not totally 'helpful' all the way through, but I've read a few relationship ones that have been written by American authors so it's been interesting for me to read the differences between how US and UK people behave in relationships. If that makes sense 😊 5y
Cathythoughts @Velvetfur yes is does make sense. And I think at the end of the day , whatever helps us has to be good 😘 5y
