Life is Elsewhere
Life is Elsewhere | Milan Kundera
3 posts | 12 read | 3 to read
Out of print since 1987, "Life Is Elsewhere" is available again in an outstanding new translation. Kundera's epic of adolescence tenderly erodes such sacrosanct values as childhood, motherhood, revolution, and even poetry, in a "remarkable portrait of an artist as a young man" ("Newsweek").

Mehso-so

The book tells the story of Jaromil and his evolution to being a poet and a human. But its nothing like The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Jaromil is heavily flawed and wrong in obvious ways. Kundera can be said to have shown exceptional courage in this honest portrayal of an artist.

Such a judgemental word isn‘t it!?

Cathythoughts Yes , good point , it really is a judgmental word alright. I can‘t think of anything for this prompt 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y

Centique I totally agree - so much judgement in the word and used more frequently to describe women. 🙄 6y

“When the poet‘s mother wondered where the poet had been conceived, there were only three possibilities to consider: a park bench one night, the apartment of a friend of the poet‘s father one afternoon, a romantic spot outside Prague late one morning.”
