Cause for Alarm
Cause for Alarm | Eric Ambler
4 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
Nicky Marlow needs a job. He’s engaged to be married and the employment market is pretty slim in Britain in 1937. So when his fiancé points out the Spartacus Machine Tool notice, he jumps at the chance. After all, he speaks Italian and he figures he’ll be able to endure Milan for a year, long enough to save some money. Soon after he arrives, however, he learns the sinister truth of his predecessor’s death and finds himself courted by two agents with dangerously different agendas. In the process, Marlow realizes it’s not so simple to just do the job he’s paid to do in fascist Italy on the eve of a world war.

Mehso-so

Just before the dawn of WWII, out-of-work British engineer Nicky Marlow takes a position at an Italian munitions firm. But his predecessor in the position had been supplying information to foreign spies. It's not long before Marlow is deep in intrigue and counter-intrigue and scary secret police. Ends with a thrilling flight across fascist Italy. Fun, but the passive and sappy Marlow is a less satisfying protagonist than other Ambler heroes.

LitsyAtoZ
Ive been into work today but im now off again til Tues so with a beer in hand i have finally made my crime based A-Z and im going to try and post on @BookishMarginalia link.
I should finish the title book which im enjoying but I've substituted for a Swedish thriller. My list is a combo of new books to me and from series im already hooked on. They are also in library and involved much searching of prize award websites. Looking fwd to it.

@litsyclassics @Sarah83
Well that was a challenge in itself compiling this list but it looks like a great challenge with books and authors that i have always meant to read, although I've chosen a few chunky reads and had to go with a mixture of names and titles and i probably have a spare list of rejected books - it could take a while 😂

BarbaraBB Great list! 6y
Booksnchill Under the Volcano- I heard the Backlisted Podcast on that one and it is now on my tbr as well! 6y
andrew61 @Booksnchill thanks, i will look for that. 6y

batsy Nice list. I was going to include Under the Volcano but then went with something I already own. I look forward to seeing your thoughts on this one. 6y
Sarah83 Great choices 😎 6y
saresmoore Great picks! I‘m interested in reading so many of these. My husband is reading Androids right now and really liking it. @batsy and I both so enjoyed reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall this year. I think you will like it, especially. 6y
andrew61 @saresmoore i think i was inspired by your referencing it on the recent 100th celebration of reading envy. Ive just picked up villette from the library so think i may have a Bronte December once i get hold of 'tenant...' 6y
andrew61 @Sarah83 thanks 6y
andrew61 @batsy yes im looking forward to reading it, although it was a random search of the penguin modern classic catalgue for a U, but it does look interesting. 6y
Moray_Reads I loved Vilette and you have some other great books on this list. Have fun with it! 6y
