Freedom In Congo Square tells the true story about slaves who counted down the days to when they were allowed half a day to set up a Market in Congo Square. This book details, the day-to-day life of slaves and the special afternoons they spent each Sunday in Congo Square. This book was definitely a phenomenal read.

Slaves in Louisiana had to work tirelessly 6 days a week, and they got Sunday off as a “day of rest”. They celebrated, played music, and enjoyed their days in Congo Square, and looked forward to it all week. This book was published in 2017 and won the Coretta Scott King award and the Caldecott Medal. This story was very moving and I would highly recommend it!

I love nonfiction picture books because I can learn about people and places in a short amount of time. I also feel like they can serve as an introduction to new artists. I will definitely seek out more books illustrated by R. Gregory Christie.

This book won the Coretta Scott King award .This book was about Slaves in New Orleans who were able to gather on Sundays in Congo Square and they were able to sing, dance, and play music together. This was there one day for they were free from work for at least a half of day.

This book won an award for its stunning illustrations, making it a Caldecott Honor Book. These illustrations were striking and really enhanced the text. It is a great book to teach a tough topic and teach about finding joy in the hardest of situations.

I would use this in my future classroom because it is a great book to use to teach something that is not always easy to teach. Also, it is easy for children to follow along with the rhyming text and amazing images.

I really enjoyed this book as it can help you get children understand how difficult life was for slaves. I would definitely use in my classroom.

This non-fiction book gives insight to what Congo square was and what it meant to slaves back in history. The book tells of how were treated, what their weeks consisted of and the things they were forced to do. The authors use of rhyming and repetition help pull the story together.

my favorite thing about the book was that it was also a poem and had lots of rhyming and repetition.. the layout of the book in general was so great, I love the illustrations and the unique designs of the pages

love, love, love. the book was written in a way that children could easily read and understand it. this topic can be hard to talk about but I think this book would be a great resource

This book, a Caldecott Honor Book, is about a normal week schedule for slaves and the jobs they had to do. On Sundays though, they were able to be free for half of the day in Congo Square with food, music, and African culture.

I would use this book when talking about slavery, or even as a fun, rhyming, book to read. This book is a way to positively show parts of African culture.

I would love to have this book in my classroom because it is a great way to introduce a history lesson about the truth regarding slavery in our country‘s past

Published in 2016- this story is based on a real place and real events of Congo Square where the slaves would rejoice in their day of freedom. It is a book about the hardships of life back when slavery was allowed to happen. It is a book about celebration of the little things as well. Even though these people have life so rough, they manage to smile and rejoice together

I like this book for a couple reasons. One, it rhymes which can help keep the students' attention. Two, the illustrations are great.

My favorite part about this book were the illustrations and the beautiful bright colors that were used.

Freedom in Congo Square by Carole Boston Weatherford published in 2016 was amazing! it was about slaves working through the week days counting down the days until Sunday. Because Sunday's were when slaves had the afternoon off and were allowed to go to New Orleans Congo Square. It is sad yet cute how excited they were to get one day off from being slaves. But rather said because they get excited over such a little thing. But to them it is huge!

A great, poetic story that tackles slavery and discrimination. Using great imagery and a rhyming it is easy and fun to read while portraying a lovely message

Freedom in Congo Square by Carole Boston Weatherford (poetry, published 2016) was a rhythmic book that told an amazing story. The images and the message are very impactful, it tackles slavery while using images thag are emotion provoking.

this poem in poetry tells a story and evokes emotion like anticipation and sadness with the freedom these people don‘t deserve. It contains good rhyming throughout the whole book and even contains different shapes of words to get more feelings of emotion!
