River Town
River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze | Peter Hessler
5 posts | 11 read | 7 to read
A New York Times Notable Book Winner of the Kiriyama Book Prize In the heart of China's Sichuan province, amid the terraced hills of the Yangtze River valley, lies the remote town of Fuling. Like many other small cities in this ever-evolving country, Fuling is heading down a new path of change and growth, which came into remarkably sharp focus when Peter Hessler arrived as a Peace Corps volunteer, marking the first time in more than half a century that the city had an American resident. Hessler taught English and American literature at the local college, but it was his students who taught him about the complex processes of understanding that take place when one is immersed in a radically different society. Poignant, thoughtful, funny, and enormously compelling, River Town is an unforgettable portrait of a city that is seeking to understand both what it was and what it someday will be.

I got a subscription to The Wordy Traveler for Christmas and my first box arrived this week! The quarterly box contains a book, tea, and art centered around one country—guess what this month‘s is? I had never heard of The Wordy Traveler before, but the box is great and proceeds go to charity! I believe they partner with Mercy Corps. Do any of you Littens get this box?

I realized that as a thinking person his advantage lay precisely in his lack of formal education. Nobody told him what to think, and thus he was free to think clearly.

These are the books I have in NY (and from the libraries around here) set in Asia. The two on the left are nonfiction and the others are fiction. #setinasia #somethingforsept

I have nearly always lived on a river. Mostly the same one. Small towns and cities along the Ohio. So I guess this title sums up my life as well as any! #24in48 #readathon #contest @Litsy @24in48

acg @kdwinchester I am also in Indiana, but have spent a lot of time in Ohio; people mistake for a Buckeye a lot! 8y
Megabooks @seekingthespheres @kdwinchester @SharonGoforth I split my time between my house in Indiana and my parents' in Kentucky, depending on where I'm working. I just applied for a job that would take me to Cincinnati, too. I do love that river! 😃 8y
