Good Night, Mr. Wodehouse
Good Night, Mr. Wodehouse: A Novel | Faith Sullivan
33 posts | 10 read | 29 to read
Life could toss your sanity about like a glass ball; books were a cushion. How on Earth did non-readers cope when they had nowhere to turn? Nell Stillmans road is not easy. When her boorish husband dies soon after they move to the small town of Harvester, Minnesota, Nell is alone, penniless yet responsible for her beloved baby boy, Hillyard. Not an easy fate in small-town America at the beginning of the twentieth century. In the face of nearly insurmountable odds, Nell finds strength in lasting friendships and in the rich inner life awakened by the novels she loves. She falls in love with John Flynn, a charming congressman who becomes a father figure for Hillyard. She teaches at the local school and volunteers at the public library, where she meets Stella Wheeler and her charismatic daughter Sally. She becomes a friend and confidant to many of the girls in town, including Arlene and Lark Erhardt. And no matter how difficult her day, Nell ends each evening with a beloved book. The triumphant return of a great American storyteller, Good Night, Mr. Wodehouse celebrates the strength and resourcefulness of independent women, the importance of community, and the transformative power of reading.

Mehso-so

Many reviews call this book charming. And I agree.
The writing is solid, and the author rides a line where things are not too religious or wholesome (a couple of moderate curse words are whispered).
Unfortunately the characters are a bit flat and the tragedy could be scaled way, way back. I went in for charming and came out depressed.

This book. WOW!! I saw someone‘s post on here that they were reading it and so I picked it up from the library on a whim. I can‘t describe my feelings about this book, to say “I loved it” or “it was great” seem so trivial. This may be my favorite read of 2018. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#SundayFunday at my in-laws. Our dryer is on the fritz so doing laundry and catching up with Wrigley (snoozing, as usual LOL). I‘m loving this book so far ☺️

WhatThePuck My laundry room is in shambles right now. My washer and dryer are both camped in my garage until we can get it back together and our contractor has decided to stop answering our phone calls. 6y
Aims42 @WhatThePuck Oh no!! 😱 I‘m sorry to hear about your laundry room, that sucks. Our dryer decided to stop heating up, so it runs, but doesn‘t accomplish much besides putting wrinkles in our clothing 🙄 Waiting on the part to arrive that will fix it, hopefully. I hope your contractor returns your calls soon, ughhhh how frustrating!! 6y
WhatThePuck It'll be a week tomorrow, not to long in the grand scheme of things. I hope your part fixes it! Fingers crossed. 6y

Jealousy made me read this. Who is this Nell person, & what right has she to MY Mr. Wodehouse?! But now I think I shall share him, for Nell's a corker.

MrBook 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻! That is a phenomenal review 😎👍🏻! 8y

Much more, much better, than I expected it to be. A full life, bruised by tragedies and soothed with books.

annahenke Loved this book! So great to see it was enjoyed by another. 👊 8y

Favorite book from an indie publisher read so far in 2016! This is a quiet, beautiful love letter to reading. (Milkweed Editions) Anyone else find a gem?

Ms. Sullivan doesn't waste any words or pull any punches in this tale spanning the adult life of Nell Stillman of Harvester, MN, who adores books, esp. those written by P.G. Wodehouse. Full of strong women and a definite Midwestern sensibility. Highly recommend!

The years would rob them of friends and farms, of youth and health, but books would endure.
