The Durrells of Corfu
The Durrells of Corfu | Michael Haag
4 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
The Durrell family are immortalised in Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals and its ITV adaptation, The Durrells. But what of the real life Durrells? Why did they go to Corfu in the first place - and what happened to them after they left? The real story of the Durrells is as surprising and fascinating as anything in Gerry's books, and Michael Haag, with his first hand knowledge of the family, is the ideal narrator, drawing on diaries, letters and unpublished autobiographical fragments. The Durrells of Corfu describes the family's upbringing in India and the crisis that brought them to England and then Greece. It recalls the genuine characters they encountered on Corfu - Theodore the biologist, the taxi driver Spiro Halikiopoulos and the prisoner Kosti - as well as the visit of American writer Henry Miller. And Haag has unearthed the story of how the Durrells left Corfu, including Margo's and Larry's last-minute escapes before the War. An extended epilogue looks at the emergence of Larry as a world famous novelist, and Gerry as a naturalist and champion of endangered species, as well as the lives of the rest of the family, their friends and other animals. The book is illustrated with family photos from the Gerald Durrell Archive, many of them reproduced here for the first time.

The Durrells of Corfu | Michael Haag

We read Gerald Durrell ‘My Family and Other Animals‘ in school so I was interested in this, the true story of the family behind the book. Just started reading the ebook on my phone. Haag includes quotes from both Lawrence and Gerald Durrell‘s books (both brothers were writers) but doesn‘t always clarify where/ whom the quotes came from.

humouress (Not quite halfway through) Very entertaining; although occasionally it does jump a bit. 2y
humouress Finding it a bit disjointed. Probably best read as a companion to Gerald‘s ‘Corfu trilogy‘ or Lawrence‘s ‘Prospero‘s Cell‘. I don‘t, at this distance in time, remember more of ‘My Family ...‘ than that I quite liked it 2y
humouress It‘s a short book that I thought I would finish quite quickly but because it doesn‘t flow well, is going slowly. Seems to be more a string of anecdotes, many of which don‘t follow on from the previous one. Quotes people often but doesn‘t mark where the quotes start or end and often doesn‘t say who it‘s quoting; could be Larry, Gerry, Margo or any one of half a dozen acquaintances or relatives. A bit dry. Reads more like research notes. 2y
humouress Do be warned; Larry and friends liked to sea/ sun bathe naked and there are a couple of photographs of them. 2y
humouress As I said, I found this a bit disjointed. Not helped by my e-book, which put captions to photographs on following pages. Probably best to read this one, if you do decide to, as a physical book. 2y

charl08 Gorgeous scenery (in the tv series) - I would love to visit. I read this in a school I was only in very briefly (long story) so had to finish it very quickly to return it. I should probably reread. 4y
