Since I Laid My Burden Down
Since I Laid My Burden Down | Brontez Purnell
8 posts | 6 read | 13 to read
Since I Laid My Burden Down has a fearless (sometimes reckless) humor as Brontez Purnell interrogates what it means to be black, male, queer; a son, an uncle, a lover; Southern, punk, and human. An emotional tightrope walk of a book and an important American story rarely, if ever, told. Michelle Tea, author of Black Wave DeShawn lives a high, creative, and promiscuous life in San Francisco. But when hes called back to his cramped Alabama hometown for his uncles funeral, hes hit by flashbacks of handsome, doomed neighbors and sweltering Sunday services. Amidst prickly reminders of his childhood, DeShawn ponders family, church, and the men in his life, prompting the question: Who deserves love? A raw, funny, and uninhibited stumble down memory lane, Brontez Purnells debut novel explores how one mans early sexual and artistic escapades grow into a life.

I read this book in 2 day‘s. I couldn‘t put it down. Definitely a book to read for the month of pride 🌈 best quote from@the book 📖 is:
“You know baby people think life is all about the big battles, but it‘s really not about that. Sometimes it‘s about finding enough self-love just to get through day‘s chores done. If you do that much every day, life gets a little easier every day.”

This is a quick read about growing up gay in the Deep South. I felt for the main character in the loss of several important men in his life. I could feel his restlessness and drifting. I would have liked to see a different ending, but also respect the author‘s view.

(Sleepy Sietje pictured because I already returned it to the library 🤗🐶) #Sietje

It‘s a good morning for snuggles and starting a new book by an author I saw speak at #TXBookFest last weekend.

saresmoore I just don‘t know how to feel about nipples on covers. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Soubhiville @saresmoore lol, I agree. There‘s another cover version I prefer, but this is what my library had. 6y

Here‘s my probably overly ambitious TBR for November. My MIL will be here for Thanksgiving week, so I probably won‘t get to read much then. I‘m already a good chunk of the way through both the Owl Post and Bibliophile. I‘m also partway through Dread Nation on audio, and plan to listen to Florida and Severance as well.

#SelfCareSaturday ✨ Giant iced coffee + good book = better day. This has been a really good read so far. Purnell has a really distinct writing voice that makes me keep turning pages. It feels so natural and funny despite covering difficult subject matter.

bookloo Please please please tell me what drink this is! Looks yummy. 🤤 7y
BookishFeminist @bookloo It's a double shot over ice with half/half. They shake it so it gets frothy. ☺️ 7y
bookloo @BookishFeminist You're a life saver. Thank you. ☺️❤️ 7y
BookishFeminist @bookloo No problem at all! Warning though: it is STRONG. A venti has 5 shots of espresso. 😂 But it's my favorite drink. It's good with toffee nut syrup, too. 7y

Barista noticed I was having a really bad day so he drew me Ms. Marvel on my coffee cup. 💛❤️

I'm looking forward to reading this short book! It's recently out from Feminist Press and looks like it will be an amazing but emotionally heavy read.

tournevis That me sending good thoughts your way, btw. 7y
gibblr Coffee and a book sounds like a good remedy. (I'm choosing friends and alcohol.) 7y
saresmoore Sorry to hear it's a rough day. ♥️ And I know I'm being incredibly immature, but I look at this cover and all I see is NIPPLE. 😆 7y
moranadatter What a lovely barista! 7y
Gina OH WOW! Very Cool! ♡♡♡ 7y
BookishFeminist @tournevis Thank you ❤️❤️ @gibblr Friends + alcohol would work too. 😂 I might do that tonight! @saresmoore Thanks ❤️ I can't see anything but a nipple on this cover either. If I look at the front/back covers together, I get *two* nipples 😂😂 @moranadatter He is!! I love to give him a hard time too. 😆 @gina isn't it?! I'm going to start thinking of comic characters to commission 😂 7y

My very ambitious list for 24in48 readathon. Realistically I'll finish Doves and read the one tagged, and then start one more. But my partner is laid up with a badly infected tooth, and our plans for tomorrow got nixed, so I have nothing else to do. #diversebooks, #queerbooks.
