Fear
Fear | L. Ron Hubbard
5 posts | 5 read | 12 to read
A novel of compelling suspense. Professor James Lowry didn't believe in spirits, or witches, or demons. Not until a gentle spring evening when his hat disappeared, and suddenly he couldn't remember the last four hours of his life. Now, the quiet university town of Atworthy is changing - slightly at first, then faster and more frighteningly each time he tries to remember. Lowry is pursued by a dark, secret evil that is turning his whole world against him while it whispers a warning from the shadows: If you find your hat you'll find your four hours. If you find your four hours then you will die... "A classic tale of creeping, surreal menace and horror... one of the really, really good ones." Stephen King

Fear wins March by default because it was the only one I finished… Not a terrible read, I gave it 3 ⭐️s. I think that rating still stands.

Andrew65 I keep spotting his books but not read any. 11mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Andrew65 This was a first for me. It didn‘t put me off so I‘ll likely pick up a longer one in the future. I know he can be very polarizing for people. Understandably. 😅 11mo

A surprisingly short read. It felt like something you‘d find in a literature textbook in High School. It wasn‘t bad, but I also don‘t think it lived up to the hype from Stephen King on the back cover. Much of it read like a fever dream, being creepy for the sake of being creepy. I think it would be GREAT to read out loud around a campfire at night. It at least intrigued me enough to be open to picking up another Hubbard novel in the future.

thebackyardgnome @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm cool! I've read quite a few books about thr religion (the bio, Bare-Faced Messiah is ontersting if you want to learn about the man himself), but i havrnt found any paperbscks here. Will keep looking for thrm, this one sounds fun in oarticulsr. The opinions I've seen are so dividrd - eithrr he's the best writer everrrr, or hes a hack who shouldnt havr writtrn anything. Wjsh me luck wirg tracking down tgis one! 2y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @thebackyardgnome Good luck! I found this one purely at random at a HPB clearance sale. 😅 I‘ll have to look into the biography you mentioned. Cults intrigue me, so I think I‘d definitely be fascinated with a bio on this guy! 🤣 I think my opinion of him as an author falls right in the middle of the two extremes. We‘ll see if that changes, I think I already own another paperback of his somewhere, so maybe I‘ll get to it this year. 2y

thebackyardgnome @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm yup :) he seems to br a decrnt pulp writsr, from thr bits and oieces of his stuff I read. My unclr was a cult-y kinds guy and my good friend's familh joined an Indian cult (im from Poland), so as a kid I becsme interestrd in all kinds of relgiions:D Also, if you likr Philip Seymour Hoffmdn, je played a characster inspirrd by Hubbard in tht movie called The Master. It's a fascinstging little film, very well actrd. 2y

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Oh! This was also one of my February #Roll100 picks! @PuddleJumper 2y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @thebackyardgnome Ooooh, just watched the trailer. There are several great actors in that! I‘ll definitely be adding it to my watch list. Thanks for the recommendations! ❤️ 2y

Starting my first L. Ron Hubbard book today. The high praise from these other authors is what got me to buy the book years ago, so here‘s hoping it lives up to my expectations… 😬

thebackyardgnome Im really, REALLG curious as th ehat you think about this onr , people are so dhvifed on Hubbard's stuff... 2y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @thebackyardgnome It wasn‘t bad. I don‘t think it lives up to the hype, but I can‘t say I‘m upset to have read it. There wasn‘t anything about Scientology in this one. I‘d give another of his works a chance, but can‘t say I‘ve been converted into a fan. 😅 2y

Never read any by L. Ron Hubbard before but I was drawn to this one by the cover, the summary and the quotes on the back.

"If you've not read Fear before, I urge you to do so. Don't even wait for a dark and stormy night. This is one of the really, really good ones." - Stephen King

"A true scare!" - Ray Bradbury

?

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm This has been sitting on my TBR pile for a minute! ❤️ 4y
ElizaMarie I have been reading this book about Scientology and it made me curious to read a novel of L. Ron Hubbard. Keep us posted! 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Sounds good, so I'll give it a try sometime; I've never read anything by him before. 💫 4y

TheNeverendingTBR @ElizaMarie Yea, it's crazy a whole religion was spawned by a Science Fiction book! 🤷‍♂️ I'll get to reading it at some point to see what all the fuss is about, just out of curiosity. I watched a documentary on Scientology a while back and he seemed like a bit of a mental case! 4y
amberdfoy Can someone PLEASE tell me about this book? It‘s written by THE L. Ron Hubbard? Does it have anything to do with Scientology? 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @TheNeverendingTBR Same. 😅 I don‘t know what to expect going into his writing considering the whole Scientology thing. 🤣 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @Amberdfoy The one that created Scientology basically was the one called Dianetics. 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm It's badly rated but it's sold 20 million copies ever since it was published and still selling 🤷‍♂️ 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @TheNeverendingTBR Lol, guess all the hype is good for business. 😅 4y

Pickpick

Written in a fashion that makes the reader question if the protagonist is suffering from a mental breakdown, demonic attacks, or both. I read this book twice in a row, trying to find any clue that would justify one reasoning or the other. In the end, it's up to the reader to conclude. Loved it! Fast paced and creepy.
