Life, Animated | Ron Suskind
What if you were trapped in a Disney movie? In all of them, actually - from Dumbo to Peter Pan to The Lion King -- and had to learn about life and love mostly from what could be gleaned from animated characters, dancing across a screen of color? Asking this question opens a doorway to the most extraordinary of stories. It is the saga of Owen Suskind, who happens to be the son of one of America's most noted writers, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Ron Suskind. He's also autistic. The twisting, 20-year journey of this boy and his family will change that way you see autism, old Disney movies, and the power of imagination to heal a shattered, upside-down world.

"Walter doesn't want to grow up, like Mowgli or Peter Pan."

After four years of silence or simple speech, Owen Suskind, son of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Ron, made this insightful comment about his brother Walt. This helped his parents realize that the Disney movies Owen turned to for comfort, the "affinity" of his autism, were actually helping him process the world.

Read if you are interested in the autism spectrum or Disney.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Pictured: Owen all grown up in front of his artwork. This was my first audiobook and it was wonderful. Can't wait to watch the Oscar nominated documentary. 8y
quirkyreader We on the spectrum use whatever we can to process what is happening around us. I'm glad that Owen was able to use art to find HIS way. 8y
IamIamIam I've heard a lot about this & I think I'm going to have to look into it! Art can be incredibly therapeutic & I love that it helped Owen! 8y

I am at an autism conference for work today, and Ron Suskind was the keynote speaker. I haven't read this book yet, or seen the movie based on it, but after his speech, I plan to.

bookishkai I hadn't heard of this book. A Hope in the Unseen was the faculty read at a school I worked at years ago and Suskind gave a talk at a faculty dinner; he's a great speaker. Adding this to my TBR. 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I am listening to the audiobook RIGHT NOW and it is excellent. Ron reads it and the story is fascinating. 8y

Okay, Litsy! You win! The #mostrecommended thing since I've joined has been audiobooks and yesterday I got an Audible subscription.

My first book is this memoir from Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Ron Suskind about raising his autistic son whose primary connection with the world is through Disney movies. Also an Oscar-nominated documentary which I plan on checking out after the book.
