I realized that between the move and the new job and all the other excitement I‘ve had this summer I hadn‘t updated my blog since February! Giant catch-up post from me for March through July. Up to 94 for the year, over 50% from my TBR list. My oldest TBR book was from January 2017, which is when I‘m pretty sure I wiped my Goodreads lists and started fresh. The tagged book was one of my favorites, though there were many.

Pickpick

I loved this book! It's a very fast read since it's mostly pictures, but you do get a mini-history of groups of diseases and progress within medical science. The first chapter does smell of artsy pretentiousness, but it gets better as the chapters get more specific.

Yup. We're heading into the Venereal Diseases chapter! 😱

DiruVamp Look at that face! 😍 6y
Moray_Reads I used some images from this book in an exhibition on contagious diseases in Scotland last year. We also had some lovely "wet specimens" from the Royal College of Surgeons ??? 6y
tricours @Moray_Reads oh, that sounds really interesting! Was that a work thing? 6y

Moray_Reads Yes, we've got quite a few interesting historical medical texts at the library and we managed to borrow some great items from other museums (a plague doctor mask, a stuffed rat, lots of medical specimens) from other museums to spice it up a bit 6y
AlaMich The puppy face is a good antidote to your book subject matter...🤢 6y
batsy Doggo wants to know, "Can we SKIP this chapter" ? 6y
tricours @batsy exactly 😄 6y

Cancer. This book is a great mini history of the world's most troublesome diseases. There are two entire pages with drawings of various tongue tumours.

Leprosy! I read a Norwegian book on leprosy a couple of years ago, and it must have explained why it was so widespread in Norway (and existed well into the 20th century, with the last death in like 1980!) but for the life of me I can't remember what the reason was. If you look at the world map of leprosy from the 19th century it's India and parts of Asia, parts of southern America, some countries in Africa - and Norway!

AmandaL I would have never guessed that. 7y
tricours @AmandaL there's even a Leprosy museum in Bergen, in an old Leprosarium (which they even mention in this book), which was only one of several in Bergen. I visited Bergen this summer and didn't even think about going there! 🤦‍♀️ 7y
RanaElizabeth Dr. Hansen of which leprosy is now known (Hansen's disease) was Norwegian! 7y
tricours @RanaElizabeth he worked at that hospital/leprosarium I never visited! 7y
Aleida They should get a box of Biore strips. 6y

Oslo book haul! I've been drooling over the Sick Rose before, this time I actually got it. "Alcohol" is a book with Soviet anti-alcohol posters.

LeahBergen The Sick Rose looks amazing! 7y
tricours @LeahBergen I know!! It was surprisingly cheap actually (like $33) and it's really a high quality book! (Books in book stores here are twice as expensive as on net stores) 7y
