The Undercurrent
The Undercurrent | Paula Weston
7 posts | 4 read | 12 to read
Eighteen-year-old Julianne De Marchi is different. As in: she has an electrical undercurrent beneath her skin that stings and surges like a live wire. She can use itto spark a fire, maybe even end a lifebut she doesnt understand what it is. And she can barely control it, especially when shes anxious. Ryan Walsh was on track for a stellar football career when his knee blew out. Now hes a soldierpart of an experimental privatised military unit that has identified Jules De Marchi as a threat. Is it because of the weird undercurrent shes tried so hard to hide? Or because of her mother Angies history as an activist against bio-engineering and big business? Its no coincidence that Ryan and Jules are in the same place at the same timehes under orders to follow her, after all. But then an explosive attack on a city building by an unknown enemy throws them together in the most violent and unexpected way. Paula Weston, author of the much-admired Rephaim series, returns with a standalone work: a futuristic thriller that is only slightly futuristicbut utterly and undeniably thrilling. Great writing, heart-burning characters, probing questions about where technology is taking usand a plot that zips and zings like an electrical current itself. This is a great young-adult writer at the peak of her powers. Paula Weston is a Brisbane-based author. She has more than twenty years experience as a professional writerfirst as a print journalist and then as a government communication and media specialist. She co-owns a writing/design consultancy. Late for dinner, late for work, late late late. Thanks so much, Paula Weston. I picked up Shimmer and forgot everything else. Adelaide Advertiser Superbly written, action-packed fiction with interesting, brilliantly flawed characters. Fictional Thoughts Some books you crave. You keep returning to the cover art and re-reading the blurb, you stalk the authors Twitter, Tumblr, Goodreads profiles in the hopes of gleaning morsels of information...you count-down to release day. Paula Weston is something special indeed. ALPHA reader The Undercurrent has everything you could possibly ask for in a YA novelillegal human experimentation, military groups for hire, companies with hidden agendas, government mismanagement of environmental threats, romance, X-Men-style abilities, a nuanced mother-daughter relationship and non-stop action and intrigue. The characters are endearing and believable, the romance meaningful without being saccharine and the plot races along with impeccable timing...The Undercurrent is a worthy companion to beloved Australian speculative novels such as The Sky So Heavy by Claire Zorn and John Marsdens Tomorrow series. Paula Weston‘s latest #YAlit eco thriller asks some interesting questions about where technology is taking us. This is on my #TBR pile. It‘s also on the Children‘s Book Council of Australia‘s notables list for this year. Have you read it? What did you think?

Carolyn11215 You had me at eco thriller. 😜 6y
KatColmer @Carolyn11215 lol! Have you read any other eco thrillers worth recommending? (edited) 6y

Mehso-so

This took me a while to get through and I‘m not sure why. It‘s a young adult reader set in the near future. Seemed drawn out to me. Plenty to think about, GMO, big companies and their power, nuclear energy and waste, genetic engineering and its use in humans. @MrsMalaprop

Suet624 I‘m starting to have trouble reading these types of books. I am so nervous about our future. 6y
Jeg @Suet624 I can understand that. Don‘t think I‘ll be reading another one. 6y

In some #BookMail I forgot to post last week, my #yachronicles box came with two Pikachu pens,a Court Of Dreams canvas pouch, a Calming Cauldron of bath salts(which is this super cute cauldron you hang under the tap & it smells so good!) a Because Of You bookmark & this gorgeous wooden bookmark with the quote "Our backs tell stories no book has the spine to carry" by Rupi Kaur. It's so pretty! Plus the tagged book of course & this months bookmark.

Absolutely loved #TheUndercurrent! I was a little worried that Paula Weston wouldn't come close to matching the awesomeness of #TheRephaim (her first series) but this #scifi standalone was epic.

It's out in July! Full review on my blog!

Almost finished actually. Action packed futuristic story in which 18 yr old Jules has been genetically manipulated to set off electric charges. She can't control it. Everyone sees her as a weapon or a threat. Except Ryan. #swoon. Appropriate sun ☀️ highlighting the cover. #augustrelease #loveozya #textpublishing #paulaweston #rso
