Far out on the plains of northern Norway stands a house. It belongs to two middle-aged sisters. They seldom venture out and nobody visits. The younger needs nursing and the older never dared to leave. Until one day a man arrives. The women realise quickly that only one can stay.

Hard to say I enjoyed this, it was incredibly stark and brutal to read but it was a fantastic book. Two sisters, one disabled and one able-bodied, live in the isolated north of Norway and have their lives disrupted by a new man arriving in town. It‘s hard to recommend a book with this scale of abuse in it, very difficult to read, but if you can handle it the writing is amazing.

As Nordic Noir as it can get, this book. Two sisters live their isolated lives together in Norway. The one who tells the story is handicapped, the other takes fulltime care of her. They drive each other mad, out of frustration, boredom, and indifference. And then a man arrives in the village and the MC sees her sister eyeing him and wonders what will happen to her if they fall in love.
A brutal, sad story, beautifully written.

Tamra I “enjoyed” this one - for lack of a better term. Sort of fascinated in the can‘t look away sense. 6y
BarbaraBB @Tamra I think I bought this book because of your review! 6y

Bailedbailed

Yeah, no...this tale of two of the most perfectly detestable women in literature would likely have ended up being the last book I read in 2017. I will not completely taint the year that way. I like dark stories, and I don‘t mind unlikeable characters—but these sisters are so horrid I can‘t bring myself to read another page. Reading a book about Trump would be more uplifting. Bailed around half way through.

LeahBergen Noo!! This one sounds so good! 😐 6y
shawnmooney @LeahBergen You might like it - but the dynamic between these sisters was unrelentingly abusive and nasty, and I just couldn‘t deal... 6y
MariettaSG Excellent review, you sealed my decision with “reading about Trump”, certainly not going to bother. 6y
Tamra They are quite detestable, agreed! But it was like a train wreck that I couldn‘t stop looking at. (edited) 6y
Tamra @LeahBergen it was a pick for me, but the characters are indeed nasty. Fortunately it‘s a quick read! 6y

Tamra @tpixie this was a “good” one, if you can call it that. 6y

“Enjoy” isn‘t the right word to describe this intense reading experience. The writing perfectly conveys the desperate inner life of the unnamed invalid sister and I was never quite certain of the “truth.” 👍🏾 Thanks for the recommendation @shawnmooney !

The first brief chapter sucked me right in! I suspect I‘m going to be ordering the books from this press listed in the back. (I wish I had leisure time like these two.)
