Slam | Hornby Nick
11 posts | 44 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
Korean edition of SLAM by Nick Hornby. A story with shocking realization of the absurdity of a 16-year-old boy turning into a reluctant young adult - one whose adult responsibilities loom large - by getting his girlfriend pregnant. It could be a warning, yet it is tender and sweet. Translated by Park Gyeong Hi. In Korean. Distributed by Tsai Fong Books, Inc.

"But she wanted to use her superpowers for evil, not for good."

This made me LOL in the car yesterday. From the time he was tiny, I would tell wildly-clever-but-fiercely-independent Number Two Son (shown at age 2-1/2; now 22), "Use your powers for good, not evil." He does...nearly always. #littledevil #hecleansupnice #superpowers ????

Alfoster 😂😂😂😂😂! 6y
Melkyl I tell my students the same thing 6y
JoyBlue @Melwilk I'll bet you do! 👍😉 What grade(s)/subjects do you teach? 6y

Melkyl @JoyBlue I teach 7th/8th grade English. I love teaching middle school 😊 6y
Melkyl @JoyBlue Your son is adorable in this picture. My kids are 22 and 24. I miss my little trick-or-treaters! 6y
JoyBlue @Melwilk Awesome! Thank you. Mine are 22 & 25. Earlier that day, they were both ghosts; but NTS had a fit with his head covered. I was able to punt, and I've had this photo on display ever since. ROFL! 6y

As a point of reference, I have another 6 Hornby books not visible to the right. I'm a fan! I haven't read his complete catalog yet; but a significant number of the novels. Slam is aimed at an audience much younger than I. While that isn't always a determinant of my satisfaction; it may be in this case. Anyway, I wouldn't want to steer anyone away from Hornby; I just may steer you toward several of his other works first. 😉

Leftcoastzen You nailed it for me ,I‘m a fan ,but I bailed. 6y
Reviewsbylola I actually really liked this one. I‘m a Hornby fan too. 6y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook I looked at this at the farmer's market on Saturday, but yeah, the skate boarding thing didn't grab me 6y

Zelma I‘ve realized that I adore his columns but am meh on his fiction. I liked A Long Way Down but haven‘t been in love with others I‘ve read. 6y
JoyBlue @Leftcoastzen He can't win 'em all. That's OK. 😉 6y
JoyBlue @Reviewsbylola Yay! 💙 6y
JoyBlue @MommyWantsToReadHerBook Have you read any of his others? 6y
JoyBlue @Zelma I haven't started on his columns. I'm really looking forward to reading them. (You can see that I've stocked up.) 6y
Reviewsbylola Oh yeah, you‘ve got to read the Polysyllabic series ASAP!! They‘re my absolute favorite!! 6y
JoyBlue @Reviewsbylola Ooh—thanks! 6y
Zelma @JoyBlue Just to warn you, Ten Years in the Tub is just all of his columns combined on one volume. So it‘s redundant with the smaller volumes you have on the right. (edited) 6y
JoyBlue @Zelma Thanks for the warning. On the one hand, bummer. On the other hand, I actually prefer hardcover, so it's not a total loss. I'll give the softcover volumes to my kids. ☺️ 6y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @JoyBlue yes, A Long Way Down, Juliet, Naked, High Fidelity, that one about Arsenal and soccer in general... I see a lot of titles in that picture I don't know, though! 6y
JoyBlue @MommyWantsToReadHerBook That‘s some good reading, IMHO! Those are in my collection, too. You‘re thinking of Fever Pitch. 🙂 6y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @JoyBlue oh yes! Oh and if course About a Boy! 6y

“Only thing I can tell you, something I learned from those couple of years, is this. Age isn‘t like a fixed thing. You can tell yourself that you‘re seventeen or fifteen or whatever, and that might be true, according to your birth certificate. But birth-certificate truth is only a part of it. You slide around, in my experience.

Anyone else read this book? I'm a quarter of the way in and really not feeling it but don't know whether to walk away or persevere!

I always love Nick Hornby books, but I love them extra when the audiobook is narrated by this stud. What a lovely story. Realistic, yet crazy. Hornby never ceases to amaze! (Neither does Nicholas Hoult while we're at it)

#BookMail Both of these headed for the October TBR. We Have Always Lived In the Castle for my spooky pile and Slam for October book club!

DiruVamp That is my favorite Shirley Jackson! 8y
Kitty_Rochsmith I read We have always lived in the castle in 2005 when I was expecting a baby girl. We HAD planned to name her Mary Catherine, but then I read that book. She's Claire Catherine instead! 😱 8y
Litlady ❤️ me some Shirley Jackson! Getting ready to start 'The Sundial'. 8y

I will always read a Hornby novel. I would listen to ANYTHING if you tell me that my love, Nicholas Hoult, will be reading it.
