Hothouse | Wolfgang Koeppen
5 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
A masterpiece by a writer long neglected in America, "The Hothouse" created a literary stir when it appeared in hardcover. Evoking comparisons to works by James Joyce and Malcolm Lowry, it traces the final two days in the life of a minor German politician, Keetenheuve, a man disillusioned by the corruption of post-World War II German politics and grieving after the sudden death of his wife. With a passionate, despairing voice, Wolfgang Koeppen (1906-1996), whom Gunter Grass once called the "greatest living German writer," creates a portrait of idealism crushed by political and personal compromise.

I read about half of this book trying to find something to connect to and then just skimmed through the rest. I appreciated this quote near the end, but this was definitely not a book for me.

Sunday morning #BookAndBreakfast

At this point I‘m just skimming this one. #1001books

BookwormM I could not get hold of this one anywhere so it is on my 1001 backlist 2y
Daisey @BookwormM I bought a cheap used copy when it was chosen for a book of the month last year but didn‘t get time to read it then. I‘m not enjoying it now, so I need to go look at the discussion and see if that helps at all. 2y
BarbaraBB Kudos for haven‘t bailed yet 💯 2y
Daisey @BarbaraBB I managed to power through to the end today, but it‘s not at all one I would recommend. 2y

There was no match between me and this book. I think the subject can be interesting (a German man getting his life back on track after WWII), but it wasn't to me. Those endless sentences, I could not concentrate and skimmed them. I did get the story but probably missed all the beauty hidden in the sentences. It doesn't really bother me, perhaps another day I'll read it again. #1001books

Daisey I started this a few days ago and am struggling. I thought I would see if there were any Litsy posts to help me appreciate it more. Guess not, but seems I‘m in good company with my lack of enthusiasm. 2y
BarbaraBB @Daisey I don‘t remember a thing about it now…. Are you going to finish it?? 2y
Daisey @BarbaraBB Not sure yet, but I am going to try a bit longer. I wouldn‘t say I‘m reading closely, but I can get through pages pretty quickly. 2y
