This is a dark, atmospheric novel, full of foreboding, which is only heightened by being informed from the outset that every character but the narrator will die shortly after the conclusion of the story at the hands of the Nazis. Not every part of the book worked for me - I didn't find the love story between the narrator and Micol all that engaging - but the melancholic air Bassani creates is pitch-perfect.

I loved this book, the slowly gathering gloom around the edges of cultured jewish life in a beautiful garden in northern Italy as fascism gathers around them. We learn in the first few pages how many of these beautiful young people died in auschwitz, and then spend two hundred pages with them playing tennis and discussion books as the war gathers pace. #wintergames2020 #merryreaders @Clwojick +16

(The #Garden of the Finzi-Continis)
The garden is a safe heaven for the protagonists.. the time stops and they can keep the world and its changes outside.

🌟🌟🌟🌟
Anni '30, Ferrara.

La_Cori English: "Set among an Italian Jewish community in the '30, we see the effects of the racial laws on the narrator's everyday life; for him and his friends, the estate of the wealthy Finzi-Contini family becomes a safe haven, the time stops and they can keep the world and his changes outside.. But the time comes when you have to face reality, and the boy becomes a man." 6y

The novel begins with the end. The narrator, encountering the Finzi-continis mausoleum, First tells us their fate and then recounts his relationship with the family many years earlier in 1930s and 1940s Italy.

This was not the novel I expected - the politics of the time were not made explicit and the story ends before the real horrors begin. It's a sepia portrait of a time and place with a creeping shadow just visible at the edge of the frame.

BarbaraBB A sepia portrait. Well said! 7y

Described as a modern classic about the lives of Italian Jews in 1938 Ferrara. Maybe it was because of the translation, but the writing seemed choppy and difficult to follow. I can see others getting more out of this book, but it wasn't quite for me.

The garden of the family Finzi-Contini, where young jewish adults play tennis while Hitler's star is rising, forms the background of the lovestory between two young adults. His love is not returned, in this book he remembers those days with melancholy. Those days on the eve of WWII, that would kill his beloved Micol. #1001books
