A tale of high adventure and survival on the Japanese frontier! In the early 20th century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi Sugimoto searches the wilderness of the Japanese frontier of Hokkaido for a hoard of hidden gold. With only a cryptic map and a native Ainu girl to help him, Saichi must also deal with every murderous cutthroat, bandit and rogue who knows about the treasure! In the early twentieth century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi "Immortal" Sugimoto scratches out a meager existence during the postwar gold rush on the wild frontier of Hokkaido. When he stumbles across a map to a fortune in hidden Ainu gold, he sets off on a treacherous quest to find it. But Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it! Faced with the harsh conditions of the northern wilderness, ruthless criminals and rogue Japanese soldiers, Sugimoto will need all his skills and luck--and the help of an Ainu girl named Asirpa--to survive.

What an interesting and different manga. This is historical military fiction about a part of Japanese history I knew nothing about (not that I am familiar with any Japanese history). It takes place in early 20th century in the Northern islands of Japan. A decorated and seemingly immortal soldier on the hunt for escaped convicts that will lead to a treasure. He teams up with a young indigenous girl who is a total badass. ⬇️

Nessavamusic I look forward to continuing this series. 4.5⭐️ Note-this is very graphically violent 9mo

This makes me feel like I felt when I discovered rurouni Kenshin back at borders books about 15 years ago. Good times back then, glad I could feel something similar it was much needed.

Really digging this #manga series set in the aftermath of the Russo-Japanese War. Shifts between violent action/adventure and educational passages on wilderness survival & indigenous Ainu culture. Can't wait to get the next volume.

Serotonin I‘m really enjoying this series too 👍 6y

Golden Kamuy volume 1

Another good read! I love it when I start a new series that does not disappoint at the very first book 😅 So, why did I enjoy this one? A historical fiction that takes place in the early 20th century in Japan AND a gold-seeking adventure. Pretty much the type of story I haven‘t read before. And I like the characters 👍 I will definitely read the next volume 😊

I loved this manga! It's set in early 20th century Japan. A war veteran and an Ainu girl form an unlikely alliance to find hidden Ainu gold. Amazing action scenes, plus I learned a lot about the Meiji era of Japan and about the Ainu people.

I don't know why I find this image so hilarious. I think it's the face she's making. 😂😂

I had to emergency read this (the usual Manga Book Club bookseller had something come up). It's pretty intriguing - although very graphically violent. I like the two main characters Saichi and Asirpa (and all the cultural bits about the Ainu people) and their hunt for the hidden gold so I may actually read more of this series.

(And with that I've finished my official Goodreads challenge to read 130 books in 2017.)
