The mail today reminds me of the real Charlottesville. The place of language, learning, and diversity. It is not a place of ugly, hate filled violence. I have walked the UVA campus and the mall many times without fear. That these beautiful places have been sullied by bigotry, white supremacy, and violence is heartbreaking. Charlottesville deserves better than this. Our children deserve better than this. Our country is better than this.

MicheleinPhilly Right on. My heart is so heavy. 7y
LitHousewife @MicheleinPhilly What a sad 24 hours. 7y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly @LitHousewife sorry from this side of the pond 😢 it's awful. 7y
Notafraidofwords @MicheleinPhilly same. I'm frightened for myself and the people I love! 7y

With the violence in Charlottesville, I want to send love to you all. There is & always has been a lot of hatred & violence in our world that is motivated by race, gender, orientation, religion, place of origin, & oppression of other marginalized groups. I believe reading builds empathy & compassion for others. Pick up a book, teach your families, lead by example. I'm here for you. You can always DM me on Twitter or Instagram if you want to talk.

BooksForEmpathy Agreed. I feel sick about it and so angry. Reading helps though. And not just to escape. To learn and see through new and different eyes. It's essential. Love your shirt 👍🏻. 7y
BookishFeminist @bookloo ❤️❤️ For every hateful person there's another that has your back. This is incredibly scary. Are you coping alright? 7y
BookishFeminist @BooksForEmpathy I'm so furious at this and furious at the people who are remaining silent when their support is needed. Thanks, though. ❤️ The shirt is from Book Riot, maybe they will sell them again! (edited) 7y
LitHousewife Charlottesville deserves better. We all deserve better. 7y
bookloo @BookishFeminist I am, thank you for asking. 🙂 I'm with my mom and we decided to turn off the news and grab lunch just to get our minds off of it. Temporary fix, but much needed. 7y
sprainedbrain Absolutely disgusted, angry, and heartbroken with this. It seems like every day there is something else sickening going on, and yet I still can't believe this is happening in the country I was born in. Thank you for all of your posts, here and on twitter! 7y
LitLogophile I've been frustrated and disgruntled since I read the news today. I grabbed LOTR and got lost for a bit. I'm mostly isolated from people who think this is all very concerning, so, really, thank you for your post. 👍🏼 7y
Aluciddreamstate I believe in open empathic dialogue as opposed to closed minded hate mongering. Peaceful discussions and peaceful protests. Wishing good thoughts and prayers to you and yours 😍 7y
Leftcoastzen It's insanity. Never thought I would see this level of ignorance on display.knowing there are people like you out there is a positive! Thanks for sharing and caring. ❤️💔☮️ 7y
mrozzz I need that shirt. It's so good to see all these comments. I've been so terrified and disappointed in our country today. @BooksForEmpathy I'm with you. Checking out of news updates alternately with my book and to enjoy some live music. @Aluciddreamstate perfect. Wish more people thought that way. 7y
