Pantheon: The True Story of the Egyptian Deities
Pantheon: The True Story of the Egyptian Deities | Hamish Steele
7 posts | 10 read | 4 to read
The most important myth in Ancient Egypt is faithfully retold in glorious color! Horus, son of Isis, vows bloody revenge on his Uncle Set for the murder and usurpation of his Pharaoh father. Based on elements from various versions of the famous Osiris myth, Hamish Steele has resurrected this fantastic story in all its symbolic and humorous glory.Pantheon contains: incest, decapitation, suspicious salad, fighting hippos, flying cows, a boat race, resurrections, lots of scorpions and a golden willy.Hamish Steele is a freelance animation director and illustrator from London. He graduated from Kingston University with First Class Honors in 2013 and since then has worked for the BBC, Frederator Studios, Blink!Ink, BOOM! Studios, Random House and Nickelodeon and Big Finish. Pantheon is his first graphic novel.

In the category of wild back stories, this pantheon is giving the Greek Olympians a run for their money.
Ancient gods are not known for their decorum, so I can't really blame the 'stereotypical juvenile dick/fart joke' type humour entirely on the author. He does manage to make some dizzying lore into a cohesive multi-chapter tale, and the somewhat sentimental ending worked for me.
It's silly and colourful and really not for younger audiences.

I‘m finding the beginning of this graphic novel very promisingly tongue in cheek (and informative) 😆

This was an extremely funny, sacrilegious retelling of the creation of pharaohs with lots of lampshades like the one in the photo. And yes, everyone is in profile except at some key moments.

Looking for some levity right now so I ordered some comics. This is weird and really illustrates how strange mythology is. Definitely not kid-friendly but pretty funny, IMO.

Mehso-so

This graphic novel retelling of the battle between Set & Horus over the throne of Egypt is full of just what you‘d expect from Egyptian mythology: lots of sex, dismemberment, and incest—and in this version, lots of semi-juvenile humor regarding all three. It has its moments, but far more cock & balls jokes than I care for. The cover image is Horus kicking Set in the balls, so...about what I expected. This month‘s book club pick—just not my pick!
