Tenth in her Hill and Jordan saga and Carol's recently formed Regional Major Incident Team have a smoothly nasty serial killer to track down. The previous installment perhaps dwelt a bit too much on Carol's personal demons at the expense of the crime element but McDermid redresses the balance nicely here. As always, there are spoilers for earlier books in this one but if you're a fan this is one of the best in the series.

KathyWheeler I loved the tv show based on these books and the books too. This is a new one to me though. Can‘t wait to read it! 5y
Andrew65 @KathyWheeler I love this series, amongst my very favourite and just started the new one and hooked already. 5y

Penultimate holiday read is the latest hill/Jordan story and they are easy read crime novels in which the formula is well established and the characters such that it's like putting an old sock on. This one finished on a bit of a cliffhanger and i know a new one is due so will have to read the next.
Our holiday rental has some great bookcases which included these agathas.

Andrew65 Like you waiting for the new one to see how this is taken forward. (edited) 5y
andrew61 @Andrew65 yes not sure how she will get out of that ending, hope it makes sense!! 5y
Andrew65 @andrew61 I did wonder given the ending if we would see more but surely can‘t end it like like that, but like you not sure how she‘ll get out of that ending. Time will tell. 5y

Really enjoyed this book. Loved being back with these characters. The story was very interesting and thrilled me right up to the last page.

A gripping police procedural by a master crime writer. I liked the diverse characters & apart from solving crimes, the insights into their home lives. These scenes & the sub-plots added depth. The plot is interesting as we discover the killer‘s MO & follow the investigation; the police‘s frustrations are realistic. It kept me turning the page. I didn‘t like the end (no spoilers) but it will be a great one to discuss.

This is the first I‘ve read in the series but it won‘t be my last. If I had been more invested in the characters I‘m sure the ending would‘ve shocked me more. Now I get to read the previous 9 books to invest in them! Great police procedural.

Jprglisa It‘s a great series and I think you‘ll actually enjoy this one more once you get some of the character history first hand! 7y
guinsgirlreads I read this one first as well! 😂 7y
ErinC @Jprglisa I‘m excited to read the rest for sure. @guinsgirlreads darn entertainment weekly for turning me into this series so late! 7y

Who‘d have thought that a fire and hot cocoa while getting my oil changed would feel so good? Winter is coming to Omaha again today and I am not thrilled!

AmyG I can‘t believe in mid-April a huge storm is moving through the midwest. It‘s crazy. 7y

A bit drawn out in places but a good concept underpinning the story. It doesn‘t matter if you haven‘t read some or any of the rest of the series as it stands alone well.

The tenth book in the DCI Carol Jordon and Dr Tony Hill series can be read as a standalone or part of the series. I love how she recaps the events from past books that the reader needs to know but without boring those who read them all. Characters that continue to evolve and surprise in believable ways after ten books is rare! Read my 5-star review of Insidious Intent by Val McDermid

It was good to be back with Carol and Tony and to see them once again hunting for a murderer, who is very clever at covering his steps. This book builds to quite a crescendo and if you are a fan of Tony and Carol you need to read the book. Quite some ending to the book. Certainly need to read the others in the series to put this book into context. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finally managed to get this book from the library and am starting the latest book in the excellent Tony Hill / Carol Jordan series. I have been waiting a while for this, so hope it doesn't disappoint! Will be interesting to see how Carol copes with the devastating news from the end of the last book.
