The story is very much of its time and place and very obviously the work of a young writer, but it's characters and its central themes of family and the corrosive nature of secrets mean it is still relevant to all of us.

My latest library #bookhaul ~ I got The Scorpion Rules because I had heard about it (and then, the library copy was all new and shiny haha), while I have been interested since forever in Stone Butch Blues, The Joy Luck Club, Americanah and David Leavitt's book.

If there is one thing I know about you, Philip, it is that you are, whether you like it or not, helplessly optimistic. No matter how much you may want to remain in a stupor of depression, you'll rise up from it. Sometimes I think you are doomed to happiness ❤❤ Philip ❤❤

Jerene's impression at the age of 7 that the world consisted of 2 parallel & more or less identical sets of people-1 dark, 1 light-just as the dolls on the toy store shelves always came in 2 versions, 1 dark, 1 light... she would tell Eliot years afterwards provided her intro to the politics of race

shawnmooney I read this novel well over 20 years ago, when it was first published. I remember enjoying it, but not as much as his debut collection of short stories "Family Dancing," which was unbelievably good. 8y
Onioons Thanks @shawnmooney! Still just a third of the way thru, but really liking it. Will def want to read more of his stuff... 8y
