Baloney, Henry P.
Baloney, Henry P. | Jon Scieszka
8 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
The twisted team that gave the world "Squids Will Be Squids" and "The Stinky Cheese Man" now delivers a whole lot of "Baloney". Henry is an alien school kid who needs to come up with one very good excuse to explain why he is late for "szkola" again. Received from deep space by Scieszka, Henry's tall tale is graphically recreated in Smith's out-of-this-world full-color illustrations.

I enjoyed the font and illustrations in this story. Each of the made up words were in a different color to place emphasis on them. The aliens looked very odd which was entertaining as well, and easy to tell they are aliens.

DrSpalding When you look at the front cover does it scream this book is based in scientific principle or does it truly scream this book is out of this world ....fantasy? 4y

Nah. Totally confused my 7-year old, who is a smart kid. I hate when children's book authors write books to amuse themselves without any concern for whether it will make any sense to kids. Plus side...ummm...cute illustrations?

LibrarianRyan The illustrations are the only reason I have this book a thumbs up. 5y

4⭐️ This was a lot of fun. A space Alien is telling a tall tale of why he is late to school. But every once in a while, his words are foreign. A lovely and fun story.

Henry is an alien schoolkid who needs to come up with one very good excuse to explain why he is late for szkola, again.(yes it is really spelled like this)Otherwise it‘s lifelong Detention. Henry's tall tale of his unbelievable trip into Henry's wild universe may be the most original excuse ever for being late for szkola. This SF story is such a unique twist on children‘s books. It‘s filled with so much imagination and has many make believe words.

MeganMc It‘s filled with so much imagination and has many make believe words. I️ could picture any child listening to a RA from this story is going to be thoroughly engaged. I know I was. #UCFLAE3414f17 6y
MeganMc Since this book has so many make-believe/ huge/ weird words, I️ think doing a lesson in context clues would be perfect. http://colleensthings.blogspot.com/2013/04/activities-and-ideas-using-book-balon... This website here has an amazing guide on how to do a lesson with context clues. This will ultimately help the students understand the book and understand how they would use context clues in their own reading. 6y

Dbenford Oh my goodness 😊😂 how cute is this book! This book sounds like a great read. Not only can this book be used to really tap into ones imagination but this book could also be used to teach students about what is true and what is false (or make-believe). This would be a great lesson on that. Nice job 😊 6y
SarahWynne Great resource! Love the weird words aspect. So fun (edited) 6y

Henry P. Baloney has been late to school one too many times and his teacher, Miss Bugscuffle, has had enough! With the threat of life long detention, Henry tells Miss Bugscuffle exactly why he's late, in his alien language (which turns out to be a lot of words from other countries)! Written by Jon Scieszka and illustrated by Lane Smith this SF book is an amazing choice for a RA to use to illustrate context clues! #ucflae3414f17

JordanD http://ilove2teach.blogspot.com/2013/03/teaching-context-clues-is-baloney.html?m... this site takes you to a resource on how to use this book to help student understand context clues! students even get to add an excuse for why Henry P Baloney is late to school again using a made up word of their own! I would utilize EL strategy 11 and UDL strategy 6.2 to help students understand context clues and help them in planning their own excuse. 6y
JordanD It's also the winner of the Golden Duck award as well as the young readers and parents choice awards 6y
DrSpalding Wow! I enjoyed this authors writing style. Students do too. It should not be too hard for them to come up with excuses.🙂 6y
MorganH Looks like such a cute book to have in the classroom! Love your resource too! 6y
