"The Man Who Walked Between The Towers" by Mordicai Gerstein. A great book for students that gives a HF twist to a NF story. Gersteins book won a gold Caldecott award in 2004.

J.Cash I would suggest this book best be taught in partner reading PR or in a read aloud RA. This is a great book to talk about the authors point of veiw and a chance to teach students 4 or 5 words that may be unfamiliar to them. Another way this book can be read is in independent reading IR or is small literature circles LC.

J.Cash All the lesson plans I found I felt did not do justice for this book. I suggest putting emphasis on all the measurements given throughout the book and have the students draw or list something similar to that size, as well as have students create and execute goals the way Philippe did (in a much safer and realistic way for students).

Hervela.L I love your post and how much you put into it. I read this book for my teach live, and I fell in love with it. You could do so much with this book In almost every subject. 6y
AmeliaS21 I want to read this book so bad! Everyone keeps saying it‘s a great book (Plus Dr. Spalding chose it so it has to be amazing!!) I love that you came up with your own thing to focus on instead of choosing a lesson plan that doesn‘t do the book justice! 6y

While this is not The Fault in Our Stars, this is another coming of age novel that enlightens the reader to love, loss, teen angst and the perils of living with OCD. After my nephew encouraged me years ago to read Green's YA novels, specifically Looking for Alaska, I have continued to read all of his work. They are all worthy of reading and this is no exception. #ucflae3414f17

This New York Times Best Seller is an eye opening HF account of the infamous Georgia Tann; the woman known to have stolen poor children from shanty boats off the Mississippi River to wealthy families or possibly worse! Chronicling a particular families journey, this caused me to research the truth behind this fictional account. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/537866/before-we-were-yours-by-lisa-win... #ucflae3414f17

I knew I'd enjoy this thriller by the author of the Twilight series when she dedicated the book to Jason Bourne. Government/spy thrillers are so intriguing and this one does not disappoint! #ucflae3414f17

I am fascinated by WWII books and this was excellent. It told the story of women sent to Ravensbruck, the only all women concentration camp of the war. Heartwrenching! https://nypost.com/2016/05/08/the-women-tortured-by-nazi-doctors-and-the-america... This link takes you to a story of the real women and the heiress who saved them! #ucflae3414f17

Chandi Thanks for that link.the cruelty some people are capable of— I don‘t even have a word for it, heartbreaking is an understatement. (edited) 6y
DrSpalding @Chandi you are right! It‘s fascinating and heart-wrenching! Totally different topic (similar themes) but you should read Before We Were Yours! Wow!😢 6y

I read this because I wanted to have it done before the movie came out. This is an example of the book being MUCH better than the movie however, Kate and Idris were wonderful! I didn't want to put this one down! #ucflae3414f17

Here's my #bookhaul @MadisonCarter & @Aimeejett from the #Scholastic warehouse sale! $66 for 24 books. I saw FIVE former students; four of which were working for books and happily teaching at Cheney, Crystal Lakes and Lake Mary Elementary! Most of these will be giveaways to my spring LAE class. #ucflae3414f17

DrSpalding It cut off the picture but that is my dog trying to dig into my book bag. Finn ❤️loves books.🐕 6y

"He is the greatest whose strength carries up the most hearts by the attraction of his own." I found this quote to be one of the most powerful from the book. Outer beauty or lack thereof is fleeting but your inner beauty is forever and that's the message that I took away from this book. Be beautiful on the inside! #ucflae3414f17 #wonder

#UCFLae3414F17 Hatchet is a Newbery award winning RF text, written by Gary Paulsen. The story is about a boy named Brain Robeson. He is on his way to visit his father when his plane crashes. Brian learns to survive in the wilderness, by himself, with only a hatchet. He learns to make fire, avoid the dangers of the wilderness, and find food. He is faced with terrible weather, much adventure, and his own secrets. He eventually realizes that the

JordanHull the plane had a survival kit and gets rescued. This page turning novel will make for a captivating LC book.

Above is a link to Mrs. Bridge‘s Hatchet LC website. She has a digital version of the book available for student use. She has role descriptions and an online tool for each role. Students can turn in their roles assignment online. Teachers could use this as a model for their own LC or print it

JordanHull and adapt it for their own classroom. This is a great UDL 4.1 and 4.2 model because it allows students various methods to read the book and access to tools and technology. During LC discussion I would use ESOL 22, giving adequate wait time for ELL‘s so that their voice is heard, and they are able to participate in discussions. 6y
juliek1 I loved this book when we read it in school. I think I'm maybe in the minority, but it was a fun read! 6y

ProfessorOak Jordan this was an incredible book, when I read it as a child I imagined what it would be like for me to also be stuck in the wilderness. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y
AJones This book is definitely full of adventure. I‘m going to read the second book over break. 6y
ashley.v I read this book in middle school. I want to read the sequels. There are two versions, if he wasn't rescued and had to spend the winter. And his return showing a reporter how he survived 6y
