I Hate Fairyland Book One
I Hate Fairyland Book One | Skottie Young
9 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
From SKOTTIE YOUNG, New york Times Best Selling, Eisner Award winning cartoonist of the Wizard of OZ graphic Novels, Rocket Raccoon, and Fortunately, The Milk comes a satirical fairytale adventure that smashes it's cute little face against hilariously violent comedy that's definitely NOT bedtime story material for the kiddies. (unless your parents are super cool and don't screen your entertainment, then... whatever.) In this oversized DELUXE HARDCOVER, join Gert (a grown woman in a six-year old girl's body, who has been stuck in a the magical world of Fairyland for over thirty years) on a maddening quest to return home. It's just her, a fly named Larry, a giant blood-soaked battle-axe and and endless amount of cute and cuddly Fairylanders standing in her way. Collects issues 1-10, along with EXCLUSIVE EXTRAS!

4.5 🌟
I was immediately in love with Gertrude. The 37 year old foul mouthed pain in the heiny stuck in a 10 year old's body. She was supposed to spend an hour, or even a day in Fairyland, but instead she has been stuck for 27 years. She has just gotten more rotten as time goes on.

We are 1 week away from C2E2 (Chicago‘s version of Comic Con)!!! I won‘t say that Skottie Young is the ONLY reason my family & I go, but he is definitely Reason #1. Last year we stopped by his table when he didn‘t have a huge line—a rare occurrence—& were able to get a family picture. With luck we‘ll be able to get another one this year. Looking forward to talking IHF, Bully Wars, Deadpool, Middlewest (which is truly phenomenal) & whatever‘s next!

Schnoebs Man I was heavily debating about driving back to Chicago because I‘m on spring break so that I could go but school still took over my break 😫 6y

I have some mixed feelings about this, but overall I‘d definitely pick it. I‘m usually okay with blood and stuff, but this went beyond Tarantino 😆. The only part I didn‘t really like was some of je concept art—a couple of the characters looked like they were committing suicide. I‘m not sure why people think that‘s funny 😤.

This book is crazy! In a good way. Gert was a little girl who wished to go to Fairyland. Then she got stuck. And 27 years later, she‘s still trying to leave. Everything in this book is so over the top. The drawings, the violence, the characters. Gert is not at all likeable and yet, you can‘t stop reading. And poor Larry who‘s Gert‘s guide in Fairyland. What would she do with out him? Thanks @TracyReadsBooks for letting me borrow this!

Sarah93 Is it kids book? 7y
ElishaLovesBooks @Sarah93 I would say no. I accidentally let my 9 year old read it before I did. She liked it but even though it‘s very cartoony, it‘s very violent. 7y
Sarah93 @ElishaLovesBooks aha ok thank you 😊 7y

Great day at C2E2! Son marched right up to Skottie Young & said, “Remember me?” Skottie smiled & said, “Yes.” He told us when people ask him what age IHF is appropriate for, he tells them about our family. See, the first time I met Skottie, I told him how much my son & I loved IHF (& that we fight over who gets to read the latest issue first). So in our family, you read it when you want/are ready to—that‘s the right age for us. We‘re all big fans!

JoScho Love this! What a great day 💕💕💕 7y

It‘s C2E2 today!!! Yay!!! Of course I‘m taking Gert along—Skottie Young is scheduled to be there and I‘d love to get the book signed. (Also want to ask him about the children‘s book I seem to remember he said he was writing— hopefully I‘m correct because that would be fantastic.) Definitely going to look out for some other artists, including Kris Anka who is working on the new Runaways with Rainbow Rowell, as well. Should be a fun day!

Now that I have your attention—pardon me while I gesticulate wildly and giggle with excitement at Skottie Young‘s announcement he is launching Deadpool #1 in June. YAAAAAAAAY! Love his artwork, love his crazy over the top I Hate Fairyland, and am super excited to see what he does with Deadpool. This is going to be fun!!! (Image is, needless to say, from his announcement on Instagram.)

I‘m a reader of eclectic taste & my deep, abiding affection for Gert & I Hate Fairyland probably qualifies as Exhibit #1. I was first introduced to Skottie Young‘s work through his illustrations in Gaiman‘s ‘Fortunately, The Milk‘. IHF came soon after. What‘s not to love? Seven year old Gert decides to visit Fairyland, gets bored & wants to leave except SHE CAN‘T FIND THE KEY & SHE‘S STUCK & IT PISSES HER OFF. So the story begins...crazy good fun.

Echo I LOVE Fortunately, The Milk! I read that to my kids on the regular. I have picked up IHF and it is spectacular as well. Too bad my kiddos are too young for it. The art is amazing and the story is hilarious to me. 7y
