A wrenching and layered debut novel about a gay teen's coming-of-age in the aftermath of his father's suicideMiddle school hasn't been going well for Colin. His teenage sister teases him mercilessly, his autistic brother lashes out at him, and he has a crush on his best friend, Andy. But after the tragic night when his father commits suicide, none of that matters. Diane, his mother, seeks solace in therapy. Colin is awash in guilt, and casts about for someone to confide in: first his estranged grandfather, then a predatory science teacher. But nothing helps as much as the strange writing his father kept in a series of notebooks locked in his study. Colin looks for answers there--in fragments about disaster scenarios, the violence of snow, mustangs running wild in the west--but instead finds the writing infecting his worldview. Diane, meanwhile, has a miserable fling with a co-worker, and leans more heavily on Colin for support as things go from bad to worse. But spring is unfolding, and a road trip to Los Angeles gives them a tantalizing glimpse of what the future might hold. In Some Hell, a debut novel of devastating intensity and aching, pointillistic detail, Patrick Nathan shows how unspeakable tragedy shapes a life, and how imagination saves us from ourselves.

Life update: exactly 2 months ago our landlord sprung on @BookBee89 & I that she was planning to sell the property and not interested in renewing our lease. I nearly had a meltdown but after 5 intense weeks of searching we found a cute little apartment not far from where we were. We moved in over Christmas and are starting to feel settled. Pictured is 1 rainbow of many I made while re-organizing. 🌈Thankfully no books were harmed in the process.

TheKidUpstairs I'm glad to hear that you were able to find a place you like and are settling in. Moving is stressful at the best of times! 3y
mrozzz @TheKidUpstairs 💖 it seriously is. I wasn‘t sure we could do it safely but we managed. 3y
rachelsbrittain Such a pretty stack and I'm glad you all were able to find a place. How stressful! I just found a new place myself after months of searching to get out of a stressful living situation, but thankfully I had time and a place to stay in the meantime. Hugs 💛 3y

mrozzz @rachelsbrittain so you get it! 💜 It was a situation I wouldn‘t wish on anyone especially during a pandemic. Good for you getting yourself into a safe place. 🙌🏻 3y
mrozzz @BarbaraBB we are certainly hoping for the best. 💗 We quite like it so far. It has such beautiful light and spiral staircase to a loft. I‘ve only left to walk a couple times and get groceries. It‘s quite cozy. 3y
Chelsea.Poole Cute stack! 🌈 3y

A devastatingly beautiful read. Most of this novel is so surreal it feels like a dream within a dream. Simply put, I love deep, dark, queer novels and this is EXACTLY that.
While the ending left me a little empty at first, I quickly realized that Nathan spoke about playing with a David Lynch inspired world full of insane clichés but with a crazy twist, and that‘s exactly what he did. I‘m fact, it felt incredibly like watching Mulholland Drive.

What a strong debut novel. Such beautiful poignant writing. I‘m not going to lie, some really hard topics...but I think the author handled them beautifully.

Today on my lunch break I'm consuming much-needed coffee in the form of a Fireside Chat (clove-something Americano) to finish Patrick Nathan's SOME HELL in anticipation of his reading with Alex Dimitrov tomorrow at Magers & Quinn, 7pm! This beautiful book had had me THINKING, y'all. Twin Cities Littens, if you're not busy tomorrow, you know where you should be ;)

Mdargusch That coffee sounds yum! 6y
