1. The first event I was obsessed with was the 1976 presidential elections. I was an enthusiastic Carter supporter in an evangelical-Republican home. Oh, the dinner table conversations. 😄

2. Library.

3. I don't remember a time when I wasn't in love with reading but oh my goodness I loved Drummer Hoff and Where the Wild Things Are. Still do.

@eggs

Ruthiella I remember that election vividly as well! We had school yard arguments about it. I supported Ford because my parents did and my friends were Carter supporters (likely due to their parents as well). 3y
swynn @Ruthiella My best friend was an active Carter supporter -- his parents were very active in the local party club, and he went to meetings with them. Hearing about that fun was probably a huge influence on my bucking the family preference. But after that my politics mostly drifted leftward, so it couldn't have been just that friendship. 3y
peaKnit I voted for Carter in my kindergarten vote.:) 3y

mandarchy I have never been a big fan of politics, but he was the last president that I loved until Obama came along. Have you read Hunter S. Thompson's take on Carter? It was really interesting. I think Carter is far more fascinating than people give him credit for. 3y
Eggs Thanks for your thoughtful responses 👏🏻📚🤗 3y
Texreader I became a news junky starting with the Carter/Ford election even though I was in like third grade or something. 😂 3y
swynn @peaknit Yay Carter! I only wish I could vote for him again. 3y
swynn @Eggs Thanks for the questions! 3y
swynn @Eggs Thanks for the questions! 3y
swynn @mandarchy Agreed. I think he has been shamefully underrated. He had weaknesses, obviously, but even those are interesting. 3y
swynn @Texreader I'll bet that made you popular 😄. It certainly did (not) for me, though it hit a little later, when I was in the sixth grade, with the Iran Hostage Crisis. 3y
SamAnne I was a big Jimmy Carter fan as a kid. 3y
Eggs Glad you liked them @swynn ! 3y
The_Penniless_Author @mandarchy Just came across this post and was about to mention Hunter S Thompson's article until I saw you beat me to it 😄 3y
mandarchy @The_Penniless_Author I love reading HST even though I'm prudently sober, I live vicariously through his writing. I had no idea until after his death that he covered Carter so early in Carter's career. 3y
The_Penniless_Author @mandarchy HST was a great writer with a razor-sharp mind (at least until drugs and alcohol wrecked his brain in later life). It's a measure of what a great person Carter was that HST spoke so highly of him, probably the only politician for whom he had unalloyed praise. Carter's always been under-appreciated in my opinion. 3y

Drummer Hoff adapted by Barbara Emberley and illustrated by Ed Emberley, is a TL that won The Caldecott Medal 🎖 and would be great for S. The book could be used in the classroom to benefit students because it‘s a fun engaging read that introduces them to poetry. The book consists of rhyming words and tells a story about how a cannon is built. It starts off with a drummer and ends with a general giving the order to fire the cannon.

Zmohammad https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/drummer-hoff This website provides an extension for after the S where students can engage with the story and begin to make connections for the words that rhyme. UDL strategy 2.2 (clarifying structure) and ESOL strategy 20 (listing important words and phrases on the board prior to presenting) would be great to introduce the students to the content before S. 6y
DrSpalding Many of your peers have used reading is fundamental as a resource. Excellent job identifying strategy number 20 listing important words and phrases. Vocabulary is vital to student comprehension. 6y
alexandracarpenter The artwork for this looks so interesting! I am gonna have to check this rec out! 6y

Drummer Hoff
This caldecott awarding winning picture book would be a great addition to a classroom for many reasons. The illustration is beautiful and it continues to add-on a new character each page. It starts off with the drummer then eventually ends with everyone and the general border firing off the canyon. Because of the character add on on each page, a RT would be a fun strategy to incorporate.

MarinaForsythe would make use of the UDL strategy 2.5 illustrate through multiple media and EL strategy 17 provide contextual support through the use of models.

DrSpalding I have not heard of this book and believe that it would make a nice readers theater or even storytelling. Obviously read aloud is always an option too. 7y
