Lullaby Road
Lullaby Road: A Novel | James Anderson
8 posts | 10 read | 7 to read
Winter has come to Route 117, a remote road through the high desert of Utah trafficked only by eccentrics, fugitives, and those looking to escape the world. Local truck driver Ben Jones, still in mourning over a heartbreaking loss, is just trying to get through another season of treacherous roads and sudden snowfall without an accident. But then he finds a mute Hispanic child who has been abandoned at a seedy truck stop along his route, far from civilization and bearing a note that simply reads Please Ben. Watch my son. His name is Juan And then at the bottom, a few more hastily scribbled words. Bad Trouble. Tell no one.. Despite deep misgivings, and without any hint of who this child is or the grave danger hes facing, Ben takes the child with him in his truck and sets out into an environment that is as dangerous as it is beautiful and silent. From that moment forward, nothing will ever be the same. Not for Ben. Not for the child. And not for anyone along the seemingly empty stretch of road known as Route 117.

Mehso-so

For me this was not nearly as good as the first one. I had a hard time getting into the story. I was really disappointed because I loved the first book a lot.

This is a well-written, literary sort of mystery set in the desert. I didn‘t realize it until I finished it, but it‘s actually a sequel to the author‘s first book- which I now want to check out (I hope it‘s on Audible because I kept thinking that this one would be a great audiobook!). And here are the #polkadots on my #dogsoflitsy and favorite reading buddy! #ReadingResolutions @Jess7

Kaye What‘s your pup‘s name ? 7y
TorieStorieS @Kaye This is Brody! He‘s named after the chief of police in Jaws! 😊 7y

Kaye Cute name ❤️ 7y
TorieStorieS @Kaye Thanks!! The thought was to rescue two more dogs to have a Quint and a Hooper, but Brody is an only-dog kind of dog! 7y
Kaye Yep maybe he knows how special he is and doesn‘t want to share the attention. 🙂 7y
Mdargusch Beautiful dog! 7y
TorieStorieS @Kaye Indeed he does not! He‘s embarrassingly rude any time we dog sit for friends and family- but we love him just as his own bratty self!! 😍 7y
TorieStorieS @Mdargusch Thanks!!! 😊 7y
Kaye He‘s lucky he has such good owners that like him, even though he may be ornery. 😁 7y
Kaye Is he one of the Australian dogs ? I can‘t remember what they‘re called. Our neighbors have one and his hair is so pretty. All different colors swirled together. He‘s really quiet and never barks. I think they are trained to herd sheep ? He doesn‘t have anyone to herd except their cat. It‘s hilarious watching him circle the cat and try to keep him rounded up. 😂 7y
TorieStorieS @Kaye Yes, Brody is an Australian Cattle Dog! He only barks at our evil mailman! But he‘s a rescue so he may be mixed with something else! Your neighbor‘s dog sounds great, too! Brody only wrangles his toys around the house! 😄 7y

I really enjoyed this #arc. The story starts off slow and the setting (Utah, winter, desert) doesn‘t jump out to me as the most interesting. But James Anderson does an excellent job fleshing out the characters with just enough detail to be compelling without bogging down the story. The mysteries are interesting and the writing well-done. Overall: 👍🏼

The language of this #arc pulled me in from the first page, and 53 pages in I can‘t say I‘m disappointed. What could be terribly boring (a trucker driving through the Utah desert on a snowy day with a small child and a baby) is turning into a compelling mystery. 🤔
