Beautiful, haunting, and ultimately heartbreaking novel about a free spirited young mother attempting to survive in an old fashioned, superstitious, religious, and judgemental small town in post war Italy. Told from the perspective of her young son, we learn as much from what is left unsaid as from what is known.

"...i felt a tremendous unexpected relief, as if all that could ever cause pain or do harm was being left behind on the receding shore, and my mother and I would melt now into an endless freedom as broad and blue as the sea."

Indulging in some porch reading time while baby naps and the boys bike/scooter/skateboard up and down the sidewalk in front of our house.
I'm really enjoying my return to this book. It's been long enough since I read it that I remember enjoying it, but not much else. The language is beautiful, and the story heartfelt.
I love the first line. Doesn't it just make you want to read more?
I first read this book in grade 11 English. I had a fantastic teacher and that was the year that I realized reading for school could be as enjoyable as reading for myself. I'm excited to revisit this one for #BookSpin
