"I m the fat Puerto Rican Polish girl who doesn t feel like she belongs in her skin, or anywhere else for that matter. I ve always been too much and yet not enough." Sugar Legowski-Gracia wasn t always fat, but fat is what she is now at age seventeen. Not as fat as her mama, who is so big she hasn t gotten out of bed in months. Not as heavy as her brother, Skunk, who has more meanness in him than fat, which is saying something. But she s large enough to be the object of ridicule wherever she is: at the grocery store, walking down the street, at school. Sugar s life is dictated by taking care of Mama in their run-down home cooking, shopping, and, well, eating. A lot of eating, which Sugar hates as much as she loves. When Sugar meets Even (not Evan his nearly illiterate father misspelled his name on the birth certificate), she has the new experience of someone seeing "her" and not her body. As their unlikely friendship builds, Sugar allows herself to think about the future for the first time, a future not weighed down by her body or her mother. Soon Sugar will have to decide whether to become the girl that Even helps her see within herself or to sink into the darkness of the skin-deep role her family and her life have created for her."

I have mixed feelings.

I appreciate the way Sugar‘s inner monologue is written and her character is developed. The story deals with a lot of issues like abuse, bullying, self esteem, obesity, family relationships, and it moves along quickly. But, it‘s *very* YA. It gets repetitive and unrealistic, and has one of my most-hated tropes that came very close to ruining it for me.

I‘m giving it a pick, but also this book can f%$k right off.😬

It‘s almost time to start planning for 2019 reading challenges. 🤓

#Popsugar has their 2019 list out and it looks fun! I‘m bound and determined to finish that challenge for 2018.

Here‘s the link to the full list, for anyone who may be interested. 😃

JennyM How is it nearly 2019 already?!?! I‘m still in February in my head 😆 (edited) 6y
Tashreads Ooh, I might give this a try too 6y
sprainedbrain @JennyM Right?! 😂 6y
MeganAnn There are some really fun prompts here! I might have to try this next year... but I‘m notoriously bad at finishing challenges 😆🤷‍♀️ 6y
sprainedbrain @MeganAnn it could be a fun one to be bad at, then? 😂 6y

"Sugar" has to let go of the dysfunction of family physical and emotional abuse once she turns 18; and find her true self. It's fraught with challenges but strength and alliances sometimes happen when you least expect them to.

I always select my Kindle First title every month. I just very rarely read them. #sugar #lyricalapril

TrishB Same 😀 don't think I've read any of them yet! 7y
Cinfhen But they come in handy for all these challenges 😜 7y
OrangeMooseReads I have the audio edition of this one. It's not a terribly fantastic story. It's decent, but (in my opinion) you aren't missing a whole lot by not reading it. 7y

Mehso-so

Parts were decent. It was predictable. Over all the story could have been better and more complex. Narration was acceptable.

Waiting to pick up Man Cub. A frozen teddy bear latte from my favorite coffee shop and an audiobook.

josie281 That sounds like it would be amazing! What's in it? 7y
OrangeMooseReads @josie281 it is caramel and white chocolate flavor. The frozen version is basically a latte slurpee with whipped cream and caramel sauce drizzled on top. 7y

I loved this book. And the audiobook was great as well. Even though Sugar's high school days and my high school days were been different, her thoughts about herself, what others thought about her, and her journey was relatable. Even was a great guy albeit a little too perfect. Some characters could have been fleshed out more and some parts dragged or was too fast. I still felt attracted to the characters and cried at the end. 🏍️🏍️🏍️🏍️/5

Finished this great puzzle while listening to Sugar. I need to write down who I get recs from because I would have not known about this book if it wasn't for a fellow Litten. And it's really good. #BlameLitsy #AudioPuzzling

celtichik This puzzle is gorgeous...I had it under consideration for son's gf for Christmas but got her a different one. I'm thinking it might make an appearance for her birthday. 7y
Ruri_kaichou @celtichik yes! It's so pretty! And it was a decently challenging puzzling, I thought. It would make a great gift 😀 7y

I downloaded this ebook and audiobook for free as part of my Amazon Prime subscription and boy was I surprised. It ended up being fantastic. Heartbreaking, eye opening and realistic. Sugar's life is a combination of struggles that she wades through each day. Then she meets Even and he brings not only friendship but hope into her life. This story is so moving and the audiobook was great too.
