Book of Five Rings (Revised)
Book of Five Rings (Revised) | Miyamoto Musashi
Here is one of the most insightful texts on the subtle arts of confrontation and victory to emerge from Asian culture. Written not only for martial artists but for leaders in all professions, the book analyzes the process of struggle and mastery over conflict that underlies every level of human interaction. The Book of Five Rings --which has become a well-known classic among American business people, studied for its insights into the Japanese approach to business strategy--was composed in 1643 by the famed duelist and undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Unlike previous editions of The Book of Five Rings, Thomas Cleary's is an accessible translation, free of jargon, with an introduction that presents the spiritual background of the warrior tradition. Along with Musashi's text, Cleary translates another important Japanese classic on leadership and strategy: The Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War by Yagyu Munenori, which highlights the ethical and spiritual insights of Taoism and Zen as they apply to the way of the warrior.

Pickpick

I‘ve always wanted to read The Book of Five Rings, so when I discovered this on Audible I thought it might be a good listen while at work. Unfortunately, I found it hard to divide my focus. I felt like I kept missing important stuff. I need to re-listen when I can give it full attention. What I did catch is great. Musashi‘s way of thinking was quite different from other warriors of his time.

Brian Nishii is the perfect choice to read it aloud.

Although the book mainly teaches about combat using swords and other weapons, i find some quotes can be applied in everyday life, too. For example, when we face our enemies, always look ahead towards their eyes with confidence. The same as when we meet and talk with other people, it is important to be or appear confident. Can be considered as a self help book.

#ThisRemindsMeOf... Day 10: Somewhat like The Art of War, this book about the art of strategy seems like a 🤯 kind of narrative.

BlueEnvy1598 That edition looks really nice. 3y

Excellent! I am surprised at what a good listening experience this is. Bits of swordsmanship advise together with insightful battle strategy advise and lovely gory suggestions on cutting your opponent down, and practicing your strokes on corpses and live prisoners. It really brings to sharp relief how brutal sixteenth century Japan really was. My husband really enjoyed it as well

I'm just beginning this. I hope it is not disappointment like the art of war was. I am still flummoxed about that one
